So why in earth they had to put Tommy D pulling in that case? Why did they pull in the first place if Roglic wasn't there to gain time on main rivals?

Roglic really starts to feel like a rider who does not like wind towards his face, unless it is the wind that blows during last km. Can someone find out when he has initiated long range attack last time?
This Tommy love fest is strange here. He's been bad all Tour so far and JV had to slow the tempo for him to keep up. Now he works for 5 minutes and blows up. Not really much in him this race.

Maybe even JV sent him to work and blow up so he wouldn't keep staying JV has two captains, because they have only one.

I just dont know how you can watch Roglic today or in last year's Giro and go yes, there's an active, exciting rider. Last year's giro he had the excuse of not being that strong. This week? Had the opportunity to put time into Bernal, and has let it slip. It's passive, and it doesn't make for thrilling viewing. Engaging I guess, but only because it's giving other people a chance (a la Carapaz)
I guess some dont watch Vuelta

I'm sorry, but how does Roglic have so many fans? He seems nice enough and all and is obviously ultra strong but he's the most boring GC rider since maybe Wiggins
We'll see after this Tour lol. In the Giro he was just bad so he didn't work, in the Vuelta he was the best and he just controlled everyone and took turns when ahead. So now based on literally 2 GT stages he's the most boring of the lot?

That uberdominant death train was gone incredibly quickly.

absolutely fair.

just hoping dumo to return to 2017-2018 levels, that's all -- he has a pretty good record in those years.

also he seems like a good guy -- one of three riders to complain that he was not getting tested enough during quarantine. I hope he soon gets back to his former self.

clearly he hasn't got back there yet -- too bad he is not going to the giro.

maybe jv now puts him before WvA in terms of train. had the feeling that WvA might have been able to do more damage on Peyresourde had he been saved for then.

also just fyi -- from Adam Yates: "Dumoulin he set a ferocious pace [on last climb] you know, and I just couldn’t hold the wheel." so it may have been 5 or 5+ mins, but it did do damage. the fact that riders got back on is not really dumo's fault. and it may have been part of the reason pog set a new record time...

Oh don't get me wrong. Not a Tommy D fan at all. I just think it is completely pointless to even put him to the front if the intention wasn't to gain time. Dumoulin might've survived 2-3km more hiding in bunch, losing far less and provide different tactical option to help Roglic later in the race. Now they just singlehanded burned the guy for nothing, and team captain saying after race that the plan was not to gain massively anyway. Nonsense.

Porte and Landa tried something and looked pretty good. Pogacar showed in the Vuelta that he doesn't mind long range attacks. Smart move by him after yesterday. Yates rode a sensible race as did Bernal who is obviously riding within himself or trying to give that impression ! Pinot another disaster. Maybe he will stage hunt in the Vuelta like he did a few years ago when he picked up a few stages. Jumbo didn't look all conquering today and there are still two weeks to go...................riders like Pogacar will test them in the final week, hopefully he will get some accomplices.

A really big thing today was how weak Roglic' team was, and how no team was really all that strong in the end. Instead of a super controlled race tomorrow it might be chaos

Roglič confirmed for Slovenian tv that he would be able to cover Pogačar but didn't, because team doesn't want yellow Jersey in the first week of racing. Roglič is very strong but team plans are very conservative.
He didn't tell exactly like this. He said he is ok with not taking the yellow jersey. And he said he didn't want to follow all the attacks. Let the others do some work and was ok with Pogačar being the rider to be on the attack (because he is his countryman anf I suppose because he was a minutr and a half down).

At least Roglic seems to know who his main rival for the Tour is going to be. I really hope as cycling fan that Nairo is still building up after his knee injury.

Which makes me wonder again why Roglic didn't capitalise. The train self destroyed, they set the pace, nobody forced them on Port de Bales.

More evidence that Roglic comments to Slovenian TV was BS. Claiming it was some strategy to let Pog away is just covering their azz’s. You don’t burn a guy like that for “strategy”. Bloody laughable.

Roglic only rides against Pog at the Slovenian Nats and even then I'm not all that sure.

Jumbo have already used quite a lot of gas in the first week especially riders like Wout and Kuss. Be interesting to see if Ineos get better later in the race but this race already has the signs of being a chaotic one which will only help riders like Pogacar and maybe even Landa.

Yep. And why drop Adam Yates in the first place if you don't want the yellow jersey?

I thought he was responding to Quintana at that point. But I think JV didn't want yellow, given that everyone except Roglic himself seemed to be less than 100 percent. Better to let MS do as much work as possible tomorrow.
