Having him race the Vuelta for 3 years in a row when he was already cooked when the race started (2 times he had faded at the end of the Tour) probably also didn't help either.I know Aru changed his trainer a couple of years ago. Could it be a case of that he might have gotten "over-trained" and just never recouped form again? I mean a lot of athletes careers has dipped rapidly, because they got over-trained. Never got back to their previous level again.
I know he did the operation to even out blood flow in his leg etc, but I always thought that sounded like a case of desperation even. Because he had been showing poor form.

Overtraining seems to get more attention in distance runners than cyclists for some reason. A lot of ultra runners in particular have burnt themselves out very badly. I remember seeing something about one American guy who won a few consecutive 100 mile races about 10 years ago who still struggles with periodic chronic fatigue now due to over training.
