Getting 0-10 seconds on Pog today doesn't mean *** and could easily have caused them to be caught

Biggest rider of JV was (almost) caught by Pog by the end of the climb.
Are you implying WVA should've waited for Roglic?
If not, Van Aert is (still) bigger rider than Vingegaard, hence was given the hand.

Pretty sure if Rog was there, situation would've been different.

He should've waited for Vingegaard, because he can win the Tour.

A Tour stage isn't in the top 10 biggest wins in cycling. The Tour is the biggest one.

But we can always bet on Van Aert to take home the secondary wins.

I don't know what constitutes a secondary win but winning a stage in the yellow jersey in such glorious fashion (avec panache, as the French say) will never be forgotten.

I think Jumbo Visma will take that, and so will the sponsors.

I remember the debate last year about the Ventoux. The question "should WvA have waited for Vingegaard?" was answered mostly 'no' because at that point Jumbo needed a stage win & Pog was too far ahead in GC anyway. But today, WvA literally looked right behind him when he went & he dropped Vingegaard deliberately.

For comparison I have no memory of Cancellara ever dropping Andy Schleck like that in the TdF & he won loads of TdF stages himself.

I'd agree with you if WVA had one 1 or 2 stages already or if Vingo was gonna put 30+ seconds on Pogacar.
However, neither of them was a fact. Now imagine happy with his stage win WVA helps Vingegaard and/or Roglic gain minutes tomorrow or in some other stage?

And what if he had waited for Vingo, were caught and Pog wins the Tour by 5 minutes, JV at the same time remains without even a stage win?

This discussion looks pretty much like the ones with The Chicken(?) in 2018, who was insisting on "Orica could cost Yates's Giro by giving 4 seconds to Chavez"

Van Aert would have won the stage anyway, so the point is moot. Tactically in a GT you ride to give your team leader/s, who are fighting for GC, the most time gain each opportunity presents. Jumbo failed miserably in this fundamental strategic goal. It's carpe diem every damn day!

Letting WVA wait for Vingegaard would have been a bad team decision. It is true that, if WVA waits, you slightly increase the chance that Vingegaard and Yates gain a few seconds on Pogacar and some other contenders.

However, it is also true that:
  • it is very unlikely that those few seconds will make any difference in the end;
  • it is a lot more likely that they would have been caught because both the sprinter and GT teams would've chased, meaning that the chance to take the stage win drops;
  • on top of that, a stage win such as this one is gold for the sponsors, especially Jumbo who is targetting the Belgian market.

You don't know that. They may have been caught, I'd imagine some GC teams getting involved with the chase as well if Vingegaard and Yates were up the road.
