For all the hate short stages get, the Tour sure has become much more entertaining after their implementation.
Sure, but every real cycling fan wants that one +200 km stage (220-230 preferably) in the high mountains going over 3 big passes. And thats something we really need, because 1) it usually contributes to a real, real good race and 2) it favors different riders compared to a stage such as today. and 3) it adds a lot of attrition.
You need to place such a stage correctly though, because much like the Lussari ITT, it can potentially kill a lot of initiative. The best example being THAT legendary stage to Gardeccia in 2011, but we can also look at the Galibier stage Andy won, although that was a decent amount easier.
