It's enough to bring a tear to your eye. Everybody in the GC mix understandably doesn't want to risk losing time on attacking in the last kilometre, but nobody not riding for Jumbo should have ever had any hopes of the stage win with van Aert there, so it was a case of, any non-GC type simply HAD TO see if they could take a flyer. Only one man had the guts, and then Jumbo were simply too unwilling to expend any of their GC men, and obviously WVA was going to sprint, so it just became a 1k showdown between Lafay and Kelderman.

van Aert's visible frustration at the end just adds to the spectacle. He should take it in his stride, there's about 12 more stages suited to him in the race, but they know they screwed up.
