Arkea rider pulled off when Van Gils was going 15kph faster and didn’t seem to see Van Gils with his look back. Van Gils could’ve hit the brakes hard but probably judged it easier to try going through the gap.
This is exactly what I saw when watching it live. If you go back and watch it full speed you can see that Van Gils was the fastest moving rider in the field and would have had De Lie in the front but Capiot either didn't see him or didn't realize how fast he was coming. Van Gils definitely should have just hit the brakes hard but that might have even called a crash. A bit of a tough one.

Jayco rode the final for UCI points as they had Matthews and Mezgec sprinting independently. And then Matthews get caught behind the Lotto crash. They would have been better to do a leadout.

Capiot even checked his left-shoulder that he could pull off that way. Not sure where Van Gils thought Capiot was gonna go, evaporate I supppse
And there is no way Capiot is able to recognize the speed at which van Gils is coming up just from looking behind for a split-second.

Maybe, although this was more a matter of the guy in front of him moving away too early. Laporte had to start from too far out.

And still I felt Laporte was closer to the stage win today than Van Aert, however strange that may seem. He's a way smarter rider.

It was obviously always gonna be a stretch to keep the pace high until 200 m to go, but he would have had a better chance of making it without the move. But I agree that an early move might have been the best choice. Have Laporte try it, and then have Van Aert join the next one.

I don’t know why for the Pau finishes they don’t occassionally use the short steep climb up from the river up to the Cathedral/chateau just for some variety. Though It’s not long enough to make a big difference.

You’re filling in for llMaestro I see ;)
I'm a fan, but this is getting ridiculous...instead of just sprinting and letting them try to overtake him, he let Philipsen (like he did Mathieu in the '23 CX WC...and others) overtake, and then tried to come around.

Getting 2nd is becoming his calling card. I wish it were different, but it isn't.

At point of impact there is no way forward for him unless he crashes or makes another rider crash. He could see it coming but switched his brain off.
If the Arkea rider had kept his line there would have been. But we can agree to disagree, and wait for the commissaires' decision.

This. I think he could have won this today but it's like he fell asleep for about the 3 most important seconds of the sprint... by the time he got going again it was just too late.
