Vingegaard losing to Evenepoel on the descent. I fear I have to make some Bambi allegations.
A reminder that the moniker was first awarded to Evenepoel after the Strade Bianche stage to Montalcino in 2021. Sunday will be the opportunity to overcome it.

Ramco? This was Bambi on gravel, and I can’t believe I was the only one finding it absolutely hilarious to see.

So congrats to Remco on winning the showdown of cycling stars! Well done. As I expected, Teddy rode a very good TT and lost little time to the winner, good job. Rogla and Vingo also with good performances (the former had the better second part while the latter the opposite). Teddy gained 25 seconds on Vingo - I hoped for at least 30 but every gain counts. Almeida with a moderate performance while Ayuso rather disappointing. The GC is clarifying more and more and the differences among top8 are generally growing (except for Pog vs Remco).

I think we learned a fair number of things in the bigger picture

- Evenepoel is on career high form, but I think his career best climbing didn't explode into extreme gaps behind
- Pogacar in a somewhat similar fashion did not make a big jump compared to the Giro
- Vingegaard has the fresh power but not the race toughness to go out hard and then sustain it to the line. He could hang on on San Luca but then imploded on the descent of the Galibier and again imploded today.
- Roglic I think is just rock solid and I think the fear of him just being at a terrible level and getting like bottom top end of top 10 or worse can be thrown away.
- Ayuso is the single most overrated ITTer by a long shot.
Always downplaying Pogacar. He still beat Roglic fair and square. What were you expecting realistically? A first place with a gap of 30 seconds to Remco?

To me it was no differ from Valloire stage. The more straight downhill stretches doing Jonas no good, and today even not that steep, so adding more power to the pedals only did more good to Remco.

Still a different story for the more technical downhill sections still ahead in this Tour (I would expect).

Bizarrely I think all of the leading GC contenders will be happy with that result for varying reasons. Pogacar extends his advantage on his main rival Vingegaard. Evenopoel wins the stage and cements his podium position. Vingegaard was a lot better than expected given his crash and poor preparation. Roglic stayed in touch for a podium position and looks to be riding solidly if not in spectacular form. Rodriquez lost some time but that was probably to be expected beforehand.

Adam Yates looks to be the biggest loser in the fight for supremacy within UAE. If he wasn't already firmly in the role of domestique he most definitely is now. The internal dynamic between Almedia and Ayuso only got more interesting as very little separates them.
Agree. This is what I expected from each of them, although Rogla did a little better than I thought he was capable of. If the gaps stay like this we could have some epic stages ahead. Just hoping for no crashes.

Jonas is in the great position for the GC win. Only 1:15 behind Pog after 1st week is above expectation. Real mountains will decide, Evenpoel will probably lose minutes and I am afraid Pog will have a day off as well.
Hard to see that happening—if anything today’s TT confirmed how much below last year’s level that Vingegaard is right now. That won’t magically change. Yeah, in the 3rd week he will be another week farther on from his crash, but it’s also when we might see his lack of training base become a problem.
No doubt he has some amazing recovery capacity so the scenario you picture is possible. But the latest performance doesn’t support that.

Yes. Less confident, but also a matter of not preparing optimally for this ITT and going so hard in the first section so that he was more in the red come the descent. Same with Galibier where Pogi was much fresher at the top.
Technical top section from Galibier summit on not exactly grandma style from Jonas, in fact second strongest descender here - more a grandma title to put on Remco's shoulders.
Whereas it was the direct opposite from the far more straight high speed section from Plan Lechat/Pantani Memorial to Valloire, displaying Jonas not at 100%. I dunno about the pure weight factor Remco vs. Jonas.

There is almost no chance Jonas and team were unprepared for this ITT. They would have known how they wanted to take each corner, the exact times they want to hit and their time checks, the exact wattage they wanted Jonas to produce in each section. The other three riders were better today.

I agree Jonas appears less confident in the downhills. He can hardly be faulted for that, but it may cost him a third bowl.
