It's EF so stupid is a fair assumption. But basically at the Giro Vaughters was saying their team would be based around Healy / Van Den Berg and said they were looking at a few specific stages for the latter. In which case today would surely be one of them. I actually think he would have a decent chance given that those you mention have been competing every day whereas VdB has been keeping his powder dry

I agree that it's a good stage for Van den Berg, I rate him, but I just don't see him winning tho, and when you have riders like Healy, Bettiol, etc. I don't think it would be wisely to control for him if a break has a chance.

Alright this is quite disappointing and perfect for sprinter teams. If they give them a significant gap before the climbs to make sure no one can jump they should be fine.

Küng, Mohorič, Lazkano etc. should attack on the climbs even if the front trio get a big buffer. Oh, and Trek too!

Tomorrow is just a far better opportunity for the kind of rider who might be interested in a break here, while there are definitely some teams that should have been in this break anyway it's no surprise that the strongest potential breakaway riders have kept quiet.

They really should but I'm already surprised they all let go so early. Could be that they are all already thinking about tomorrow, in the end it is probably the better opportunity.

I wonder if Trek riders have not been told that Mads is no longer in the race because they have zero chance winning from a bunch sprint

Tell me who those 6 or 7 are?

Lotto and Intermarché yes. Trek obviously not anymore. Doubt Alpecin chooses a sprint with Philipsen over Van der Poel in the break in a stage like this. The only other teams that maybe could help are Cofidis for Coquard but it's Cofidis we're talking about and Jayco for Groenewegen.

Jayco will ride for Matthews as its probably too hard for Groenewegen. Add Alpecin, while AG2R have options . Then you have Bahrain for Bauhaus, IPt, then you have Movistar for Aranbaru.
