But he looked very dissapointed when going in the car so its plausible.

target fixation, he wasnt looking that far ahead, might also have been in a fair bit of pain and not concentrating on all the details being passed to him, it happens doesnt it, doesnt quite need the 3rd degree to explain it.

there was the story from last week where I cant remember which rider it was but needed the toilet quickly, stopped at a RV, came back out didnt have a clue where they were in the race and ended up chatting I think with Alaphillipe again, who also had no clue where they were, who was up front or what was going on in the race.

Before assuming Alaphilippe genuinely believed he'd won, maybe we should check the UCI rulebook to see if there's some sort of punishment for celebrating 3'd on purpose.

His team might just be saying that to cover for him here. It definitely looked like he was joking with his celebration.
