I had the impression that they did that on stage 2, if memory serves there's a moment on one of the penultimate climbs where Jorgenson looks behind to see Narvaez in difficulty, and increases the pace. It worked then as he didn't have the legs to do a decent leadout for the last climb. They got helped a little here by Evenepoel sensing an opportunity to gain loads of time and doing a much steadier pace, he was acting as a defacto Almeida.

Vauquelin then is incredibly full of himself and needs to eat some humble pie come the real mountains

Pointless as I didn't believe he would need this particular stage to win this TdF.

Personally I find it pointless to be a cannibal. Since it means you can't savour a win. It serves no one but fans, and hardly fans either, as seen yesterday by the Pog fan who found it absolutely hard to be a Pog fan. (I've forgotten who it was who made that post. ) But that was not what my post was about.

I do understand what you're saying, even if I'm not sure I fully agree. I got into cycling because of Pogacar - the first stage I ever watched was the Granon stage in 2022. I got used to seeing him as a sort of plucky underdog, which obviously seems laughable after 2024/ 2025. I enjoy watching him race a lot less now, though, because it's hard to enjoy the victories that seem inevitable. By far my favourite races this year have been the ones he didn't win (MSR and Roubaix). However, I do understand why he still wants Tour de France stage wins - as a cyclist they will have a lot of value to him, and I suspect he has his mind on Cav's record too. So I find it hard to criticise him for that, although I now find myself rooting for Vingegaard, which would have seem unthinkable to me after the 2022 Tour.

Wow you are a more newbie than I then! :) I was a Vingegaard fan before 2022 and after Rogla had went home I hardly watched. I didn't like 2023 Visma winning everything. I always root for underdogs and I almost always hate a rider before I like them. I am an Almeida fan if and I prefer races without any mutants like this years giro :)

Everything played out just as expected before the stage: the break was tightly controlled (though I didn’t think Alpecin would help Pogi that much), Van der Poel was nowhere to be seen in the finale, and Pogacar took the win in a reduced sprint with Vingegaard in second. Obviously, those who had MVDP down as a stage favorite were delusional.
