reading what chavanel says, he knew what had happened behind but basically didn't think about it and just kept riding, and when he realised he could have yellow he pushed again to try to get a big gap. sneaky bastard:D

Versus never really gave me a good idea of who was in what group after the crashes.

I know you had a few riders up the road, then a chase group with Cancelera in it.

The next group contained Lance, the one after that had Contador, then some distance back was the Saxo group.

I think Contador may have dropped back for a bike change though, as the TV did show him reconnect with lance's group.

My big question... who was in that first chase group with Spartacus? Were there any GC guys there at all?

in the first group:
Menchov, Gesink and Sastre and LL Sanchez (if you count him).
Second group everybody else, including Bertie (who as you said only dropped back due to a bike change)
Third group Schlecks
further behing VdV

martin was in the front after the crash, and a sky guy i think. not really sure as the cameras were more focused on the carnage

Maybe Sastre from what I've read? (I'm not sure though)

But he was probably like "I don't want to be here anyways so yeah please let's all calm down and take it slow" :D

So a moto crashes and spills oil on a descent, hmm, quickly radio to the people in charge or stand in the middle of the road waving your arms like a mad man, and WARN the friggin riders there's bloody oil in the road, wtf??? this moto rider didn't bother to check, or didn't notice, or what?? this should be part of the moto handbook, oil + bicycle costs these boys dearly, and you have the audacity not to warn them?? did the moto driver even strip naked and throw all of his clothes on the oil, and implore the fans to do the same?? wtf! as a fan if I saw oil on a descent I'd do SOMETHING about it, wave down a car or moto and commandeer their radio. srsly. wtf. hope that moto guy got sacked and put in prison.

There were no fans there and the peloton gent through there less than half a minute after the crash of the moto. Nothing could've prevented it probably

It was directed about the AG2R rider on the left, Maxime Bouet, for breaking the line surging forward for second place on the stage.

Yeahh that wasn't really a good move. But he's still young, first TdF ... maybe he didn't know any better.

Good point - even though the moto guy maybe shouldn't be put in prison though.

I remember when Fränk Schleck crashed in the ravine at the Tour de Suisse and his bike was still in the middle of the road - you can see the guy on the back of the moto frantically waving his arms at the approaching peloton to signal there's an obstacle in the road.

Sporza now says that Farrar will start tomorrow, even though his elbow is messed up, but Vandevelde is out.

Does BP have an oil rig on the side of that mountain by any chance? Gulf Coasting it

They ARE the official title sponsor of that stage.

Yeah, Thor got screwed.

He would have likely won Green if they had sprinted for second. Not only that, he likely would have had green pretty much locked up barring a crash. He'd have a 50 point lead on Cav, and the only sprinter who'd have been within 15 would have been McEwen.
Blar!

If Sastre had gone down, he would have more than happily pulled up too.

Where is it reported that a motorcycle did this? Sounds like an awful lot of oil to do that much damage.

Where were the Liquigas riders at? In the second peloton with Lance and Alberto or at the front with Cancellara?

They could have gained the most if all their leaders were at the front, so probs to them if they decided not to ride, despite the good situation for their leaders.

Same with Sky - where was Wiggins?

Basso was in the Contador group. I think Kreuziger too because he crashed. Not sure about Wiggins but i think he was there too. Gesink, Menchov, Samuel Sanchez, Evans, Sastre, Rogers, Tony Martin and maybe L-L. Sanchez were in the Cancellara group.

Can anyone, besides 3 cheese pizza, point out where it says a motorcycle caused a 200 ft slick?

I thought I saw the race director pulling alongside Chavanel after the crash and talking to him? Anyone hear (a report of) what was said?

Yes. I read lips, and he told him to put down the pedal, because this is the last opportunity a Frenchman is gonna get on GC.
