Wasn't Barguil overrated? :p
We'll see in the coming stages, I guess. 3 k from the top there was still a group of 30 guys, so I can't imagine the gaps were very big.

Surprising to see Warbasse in that group for the USA, and not Boswell.

There were 6 guys away at a certain point Warbasse was with those 6 aswell, together with Olivier, Barguil and 3 others.

Yeah I know, and that's what's surprising. I rate Boswell higher than Warbasse.

Some guys must have caught back on the descent:

1 Warren Barguil (France)
2 Gennady Tatarinov (Russie)
3 Juan Chamarro (Colombie)
4 Daan Olivier (Pays-Bas)
5 Sergey Chernetski (Russie)
6 Mattia Cattaneo (Italie)
7 Jay McCarthy (Autralie)
8 Sergey Pomoshnikov (Russie)
9 Pierre Paolo Penesa (Italie)
10 Antoine Lavieu (France)

edit: or maybe this is GC?

Barguil wasn't and isn't overrated - he's one of the biggest favorites for this race and one of the biggest U23 talents.

quod erat demonstrandum.

TBF, as a climber in the real mountains he hasn't shown that much. But that's what this Tour de l'Avenir is good for.

So he is in fact the new Yannick Eijssen? I wonder what excuses he'll have for failing in the remaining stages then. :D
Also Jungels is disappointing me somewhat. He's not built that heavy (69 kgs) so I expected him to climb a lot better with his big engine.

It's also unclear to me why is Tim Wellens eligible for an U23 selection.
I thought he'd turned pro a few months back, and with Lotto being PT he shouldn't be allowed here. Does someone know more about this?

He destroyed everyone at Pays de Savoie - in the real high mountains. He lost GC only due to some illness-related troubles on stage 1 of the race.

Participation
2.14.018 The road racing nations cup is reserved for men from 19 to 22 years, comprising the riders being
part of a UCI ProTeam.

There have been pros of the highest level participating in Nations Cup events all the time, the first being Trols Vinther, iirc.

chamorro won the kom sprint and that says a lot about the lack of climbing level in this avenir. I can see him win this as it goes now

i hope that mattia cattaneo has the form to perform well.
maybe tomorrow is too hard, because he is not a true climber even if he can climb.
penasa and zilioli are good too, italy has to make the race hard since the madeleine.

barguil has a similar prophile to mattia, somehow: he is not a true climber but he is strong .
