Bigger race and deeper field here I know but it seemed a very similar last km to the one where he took his first pro win in the Ruta Del Sol if I remember correctly
Not really:
The final kilometres are rolling and, at times, very narrow and/or technical. We have 1.1 km at 3.3% ending with 700 metres to go, this is followed by a slight downhill, then finally turning right at just over 250 metres to go onto the wide final stretch, which averages 4.2%.

Dennis is looking good, he might be Jumbo's best option for the gc here.

depending on how steep that last ITT is, i agree.

TTers often beat or rival climbers on an MTT where the gradients are not extreme.

It can then be about steady power.

Hinault absolutely crushed these while not being a top/pure climber.

Please stop winning Teuns! You are supposed to save Lotto the upcoming years and they're not gonna be able to pay you if you keep going like this
I think Lotto needs to start throwing all their youngsters into GC battles and see which ones stick. A 20th spot in GC of the Giro is 40 UCI points. That's the same amount as a 2nd spot in a Giro stage. I think it's far more likely for a guy like Van Gils to manage that, than win a stage. Even 25th in GC is still 32 UCI points, where as 5th in a stage is only 4 UCI points. So as far as points go, riding for a GC is more interesting than trying to win a stage, since i think a stagewin is a lot less realistic for those guys. You maybe have 3 shots in a GT to get a stagewin, and chances to finish outside of the podium on all of them is more likely. I'm talking about Cras, Van Gils, Moniquet, Vervloesem, Kron, Holmes... Lotto needs to swamp every GC race with these guys. None of them will be able to go for a top 5, not even in a race like Baloise Belgium Tour, but they can get a few of them in the top 15 of smaller GC races and top 25 of bigger GC races.

But knowing Lotto, they will likely aim for a stagewin with those guys and miss, earning zero points instead. They can go for wins with De Lie, Campenaerts, Wellens etc.

Considering that Kuss and Kruijswijk got dropped in the final kilometre that seems a safe assumption.
Kruijswijk did not get dropped in the final kilometre. Kruijswijk was clearly visible behind the fall. After the fall there were only 3 Jumbo in the peloton. Gesink, Kuss and Dennis.

Then how did he finish in 41st when the first peloton was clearly bigger than that, only 22 seconds down when everyone else who got held up lost at least a minute more than that, between a bunch of people who were in the first peloton and were either on domestique duty or simply couldn't follow?

At best, he did get held up, then made it back and got dropped after that anyway, because 22 seconds to Teuns is 10-15 seconds to the back of the peloton and a small group loses more than that to the peloton in the run-in to the hill and the sprint up it.

Well I rewatched the footage on Eurosport Player several times and I do not see him in the group after the fall. So I can't explain how. But he can't have been in there.

I see him coming from behind to the peloton just before the final climb, at the beginning I thougth was Gesink coming back after his job but that were Kruijswijk shoulders.
I believe he was the only one coming back after the crash, he is in the form of his life or he got motorpaced .

I assume the riders coming in at 1'28" were the ones caught behind the crash who didn't give up? Pinot, Higuita, Tiberi, Meintjes, etc

Mixed up with a few people from the front group*, like Cavagna and Amador.

*Well, from the front group until they let go of the front group, and was thus no longer in the front group.
