“I was better than expected, because I had my doubts, since I took several months without riding after the Tour de France,” Contador said. “I started training after the team training camp in Israel, in the second half of December, but despite everything we’ve done a good job and we got a rather unexpected victory for me.”

Leipheimer took second in both the stage and the general classification.

“With two kilometers to go Levi attacked Contador,” said Omega Pharma-Quick Step sports director Davide Bramati. “At 300 meters from the finish Contador took off and Levi, who had worked hard beforehand, couldn’t respond to the acceleration.”

Contador said he believes Leipheimer is the strongest for the overall win. “(Leipheimer) looks very fit and highly trained,” Contador said. “For me this victory was important, but there are others more favored than me, for tomorrow’s time trial and for the overall.”

"Alberto's got more punch than me and I think when it comes down to it he knows how to sprint better than I do and he showed that here today," Leipheimer told Cyclingnews. "I felt really good. My team worked really hard before the last climb, and I think that that helped, but it was really windy. There was a lot of headwind and sections where we went into the mountain and there was a tailwind and no wind and I tried to attack every time there but it was very short-lived.

"I'd come into the headwind and let off the gas. I had a feeling that everyone was just hanging on but there's not a lot you can do about that."

Leipheimer was the only rider to answer Contador's winning attack, and the Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider was quick to continue pushing the pace to the finish line.

"When Alberto put in his last attack and I was the only one with him. I pulled a lot because tomorrow's a time trial and if you gain seconds over people it means a lot," said Leipheimer. "I had the feeling that Alberto was on the limit, but it was just a choice I made and I think it was a good one."

Apparently we should give Leipheimer a bit more credit as he was actually attacking and pulling hard with Contador in his wheel. Not many riders would do that.
Also good to read Leipheimer is thinking ahead about the TT so he is really going for the win. He usually is a wheelsucker, but I think he's just playing his cards well and he tries to win all the races he enters. I'm gonna say I like him just for that!

Apparently Contador did a Leipheimer ;)

It makes no sense though, since Freire had only trained for one week at team camp. Not that anyone would be able to win a MTF with just one week of training.

Contador didn't race anymore after the Tour till the second part of December. Freire has a much longer season usually.

I doubt Contador sat with his *** on the couch since August. He probably rode his bike quite often and had a trainingcamp in December.
Besides his pretty impressive talent it's not that suprising he won.

He uses the same as the rest of the team.. Specialized, same with the helmet his deal with Giro ended for this season.

Definitely not the same shoes as all the others . I know he has a personal deal with Specialized, which (from) last year also included his shoes (before he wore Sidi's). Maybe some special/new (proto)type from S-works?

Leipheimer is not far off the schedule for the former Cali dates so it no surpise that he's riding well. This is familiar territory for him, but he's already accomplished something in these pictures that will help him win slot in as team leader in the TdF this year despite this final outcome of the race. I don't think Tony Martin can climb on this level.

Contador could not put any time into leipheimer on the hill. hes noy on the form on which he excells at tts. look at algarve last year. 3rd on the hill nowhere in the tt.
Levi meamwhile is stronger at tts than he is at climbing. What conti says about him being favourite makes sence and i hope levi pulls it off.

How can you sandbag in a ITT or on a climb like yesterday?

Tomorrow's climb is much steeper. Levi most likely will take good time today, but it may be a vary close thing because he will be limiting his loses on the Stage 5 final climb. Contador will fight to take the overall.

I am happy for what Cayetano Sarmiento is showing. :). He was hired by liquigas to help Baso and Nibali in the mountains. The question is to which grand tour is Liquigas going to take him, to the Giro or to the Tour?

I guess it depends to which one is Sylwester Szmyd going.
