Because Astana forgot to bring any radio's with them. Steegmans did well to finish second considering he was boxed in right in until the end. If he got a clear run, who knows?

I don't think that's why he couldn't finish with the group. Allan admitted he was having a bad day in any event. I just hope he bounces back from this mentally.

Also, as Susan pointed out, Astana didn't bring radios. Whether they did so intentionally or, as you suggested, forgot them, is an unanswered question.

Awesome start to the season, especially for Greipel and Columbia. Good to see Sky in the mix.

And great to read a story and see pictures without a certain you-know-who all over them.

Let the season begin!

you didnt listen to the commentary.. they did there best, although it was a vast improvement on the sherwen liggett show.. its only really when liggett found his way into the radio show the topic immediately changed to him...

I really do think liggett is obsessed, and im starting to wonder just which forum member he is... cos hes here, im sure of it.. :D

Good sprint by Greipel, a few tactical mistakes (Read: Ag2r).

Also, Dim:
After watching the SBS version of the TDU highlights compared to Sky's i've seen a difference. SBS have some Australian guy chatting with Ligget before the stage.

Now for my example of how high up Armstrong's *** Ligget is.

Australian fella' "So who will win"
Ligget: *some australian guy* "Lance Armstrong could also win this race, especially since he attacked during the classic"
Australian: "So, what about the chances of Cadel Evans"
Ligget: "Well, he's going to want to peak for the Tour de France and he's here really to show off, he won't be in the best form, so no."

LOL. Brilliant display of logic and consistency by Ligget. Simply brilliant.

Phil Liggett is beginning to remind me of legendary F1 commentator Murray Walker in his final senile years of being allowed behind a mirophone. I see Paul Sherwen needing to fill the Martin Brundle role of chief on-air error corrector.

I must highlight some things of the commentary yesterday,
1. When they changed shots from the back of the field to the helicopter, we saw that Radioshack was on the fromt, did you hear liggett? he wet himself seeing armstrong on the front.
2. When he was talking through the sprint it was lance Armstrong's teammate who came 2nd in the sprint.
3. When armstrong was streching his back, he was making groans and commenting on him streching.

He's always been like that

I was watching the 2003 Vuelta DVD just the other day.

As with every other WCP productions, he had quite a few howlers despite this being pre-written scripted commentary written long in advance of recording.

My 3 favourites from that DVD :D

3. *Nozal keeps grabbing the radio to talk to his DS*. Liggett: "Nozal is obviously having stomach pain, he keeps clutching at it"
2. "The atmosphere is so electric you can cut the electricity with a knife"
1. "This is the time trial. The race against the truth"

Oh phil phil phil phil.... :p

That's why lance was so good at the time trial;)

I just saw it. Have to say, I didn't find the commentary very informative. Who were liquigas trying to set up for the sprint? was the last man really supposed to be the next-to-last-man, or was he the last man and went far to early? and why did sicard suddenly disappear from the breakaway? what became of rohregger? etc. it must be hard to edit a bike race down to half an hour, especially when you're obligated to talk for at least a minute about some mansion that was once in a movie, but still. I'd hate so see a race that was less uneventful edited the same way.

i agree the highlights were very sketchy. they spend too much time interviewing liggett and other riders at the start of the coverage. Liquigas were setting up Sabatini. quite enjoyed yesterdays stage. Entertaining.

I guessed sabatini, to me guarnieri seems maybe just as good? (great to see chicchi win in argentina, by the way.) And yes, for a stage that ends in a sprint and greipel wins, it was quite entertaining, what I saw of it in the highlights-show. With the young australian up front, rohregger bridging, and then probably dropping him, from what I can tell..
