It's a wonder he still has his job considering his commentary and the breast cancer controversy.
Healy & Slater are very biased commentators. I am an Aussie and I find their one sided commentary for Australia sickening.

I'll grant you that he tries - remember that in the sports he has covered in the past he has had a lot of experience with them first - or has restrained himself to just filler commentary when he is knew to them.

But if he lobs into cycling I will vomit. When he says things like 'special', it just creeps me out.
I was more saying that it would be funny if he commentated it because how people would react to him saying special or delicious during the cycling :D

Me being a self confessed Aussie summer cricket addict have to say that would be bad for me. The cricket season does not seem that exciting in the test front for Australia and the TDU shall not be covered as well and take a backseat.

At least Slater is a joker or fits a joker persona. Healy doesn't even make me chuckle.

I don't think delicious is a word I would attribute to Cadel, special otoh definitely.

India to play Australia, it may be good (hopefully) and considering the fact that Australia need to get up in the rankings the TDU will definitely take a backseat in the clash days.

Prior to joining Nine I thought Slater was good, knew exactly what he was talking about. Since then though he's just resorted to being a standard Nine commentator who probably doesn't watch a game of cricket outside the Australian summer (at least that is the impression they give the audience).

He's still there. I've heard a strong rumour or two that people like Tony Grieg have a job for life because of their involvement in World Series Cricket when Kerry Packer was setting the competition up.

I always thought it was precisely because of World Series Cricket that he's there. Ian Chappell as well. I also believed that it is because of the World series that 9 have got the TV rights for home matches.

Though I don't always agree with Chappelli, I think he's the best on 9 after Benaud. He even turned out to be a pretty gracious loser (which I never believed he was) in the Ashes earlier this year.

Heh, if you're an ex-pat yank you'd feel right at home with delayed coverage of the baseball, gridiron, and nascar! Actually I tell a lie, nascar they do show live. :D

That channel is the biggest disappointment ever imo

Yeh, I love the marketing speak.

Hitaf Rasheed, General Manager Events South Australia, welcomed a new era in the life of the State’s largest sporting festival.

“We’re excited about the new partnership with the Nine Network, who have a proven track record in the coverage of major sporting events and are the official broadcasters of the London 2012 Olympic Games,” Ms Rasheed said.

“Our goal is to grow the promotion of the Santos Tour Down Under and the sport of cycling and to give existing fans increased access to the event, while at the same time reaching out to a new audience. We’re confident this can be achieved with the Nine Network’s Wide World of Sports and associated website on the ninemsn portal,” Ms Rasheed said.

Actually, this is true. One of the key issues with sports being covered on SBS is that a large portion of Australia (ie. outside major cities) don't receive SBS. Channel 9 however does have far broader coverage through the affiliated regional WIN network.

Whilst we will no doubt have to put up with some muppet generalist sports caster topping and tailing the (Phil and Paul) coverage, for me I think this is offset by the fact that road cycling is seen as being mainstream enough in Australia that Channel 9 has picked it up.

9 isn't shown outside metropolitan areas either, they have their sub-stations that broadcast most of their stuff and anyone that lives in regional areas can tell you, its never a carbon copy of the main station either, especially when it comes to sports.

Is the RWC already forgotten? Because of anti-siphoning laws, 9 had all the rights to the event and look how **** that coverage was. This will not be a good thing for the TDU.

No, TDU Cancer Council Classic will not be shown live so there will be LESS coverage. TDU just screwed over the media source that has actually supported cycling over many many years. I don't really think that they will get that many more viewers watching the race on TV unless it is actually on Channel 9. That's not going to happen with the Cricket. See how the media release said "Nine Network"? It will be shown on GEM. Diehards will watch it but the viewership won't change. SBS has always given a lot of behind the scenes coverage on their tv coverage and on Cycling Central. There will be none of that on CH9. SBS actually have people who understand (to a certain extent) and love the sport on their coverage There will be none of that on 9.

Maybe after the Aussie perfomance of 49 in South Africa, Channel 9 might slot the cricket in around the cycling

So how come on the website it says
"The Broadcast partnership will see the final weekend of the Santos Tour Down Under broadcast live on Channel Nine in 2012, with the remainder of the event shown in a dedicated highlights package each evening. These live stages will also be streamed live on the Wide World of Sport website."

They will have the same highlights packages as ever, the final two stages live as ever, the only change will be the non-live broadcast of the classic, but was there even live coverage of that last year? We certainly didnt get live coverage of it in the UK and Sky bought the whole TDU package, we didnt even get highlights of it till the tdu preview show.

So whats changed? Nothing, and its been shown on C9

Again you are making some assumptions. I am still very much sceptical CH 9 will show highlights at a reasonable time and/or put it on their main channel. They did show live coverage and highlights in Aus and I am pretty sure you stated on Twitter that you weere one of the only people watching the Wilunga stage live on ITV or Sky. I think I actually may have bit more of an idea on this considering I live in Aus. It may not affect international viewers coverage but it certainly will affect the locals viewing of the event.

Im making assumptions based on it saying on the tour down under websie that the race will be shown "live on channel 9". how stupid of me to believe the race organisers and the broadcasters. :D

Im not convinced living in australia gives you a better idea or not. We both see the same press release and the press release saysit will be shown on channel 9. Wether or not you beleive that or not has nothing to do with you living there. :D

And no, we did not get the classic live last year in britain. Which was strange, as the tv package apparently comes as one big deal yet in britain they showed the last two stages live and highlights of the rest. No classic live.

Likewise here Craig.

Bemusing its the Melbournite going on about it the most. Oh and after the constant bagging of the TDU all year, internationals are complaining about it not being shown? Also not a lot of sympathy with the limited coverage shown elsewhere. Welcome to what Aussie cycling fans have to put up with all year.

personally, as an international viewer, i think 2 live stages and a bunch of highlights is fine. Theres really no point showing full live coverage of the early stages (although going to them live for the final 30km wouldnt hurt).

Im just struggling to see what acf's issue is. the coverage appears to be the same, and appears that a greater portion of the australian public will now be able to see the race. Of course, not being australian I dont really know what im talking about.

Not being overly knowledgeable about the truisms of UK TV broadcasters but I think 9 would be closely represented by ITV? SBS would sort of be like BBC (although obviously ABC is our carbon copy of the Beeb).
