Is he going to target the general classification at the Giro d'Italia or the mountains jersey like Geoffrey Bouchard in 2021?
I haven't heared anything, mountain jersey/stage hunting would make more sense.

"We haven't decided yet, and it's nothing I'm thinking about at the moment. Aurélien is definitely designated to go for GC in the Giro. I have done quite a couple of race days already. We will see, how I cope with that, and then decide, if it makes sense to go for GC in the Giro again", is what he said in Austrian press today.

Who has Dainese pissed of to be send to this race? Oh well, it's DSM so they probably just felt like doing that...

I think it's known that DSM and Dainese aren't really the best friends anymore right? Dude won a Giro sprint last season and wasn't in their top 3 sprinters at the beginning of the season if I remember correctly.

Maybe he wanted to be sole leader for the Italian races, now that Bardet focuses on a French racing program again?

Then, they sent him to the Tour of the Alps!

Actually that truly could be the reason, since we're talking about DSM!

Thanks, I didn't know that, but it's DSM, so no surprise.
Even when he won that Giro stage he wasn't the designated sprinter. It was Bol, who was feeling bad that day and they ended up going for Dainese...

Yeah i don't know for sure, but I remember some comments about it after DSMs team presentation in January. Also his schedule just looks weird and it looks like he isn't even riding the Giro so.

it was the same in Tirreno this year, when he got his best result of the season so far. He was supposed to lead out Mayrhofer that day, but he told him to give it a go himself

Dainese and DSM aren't on best terms because the team doesn't view Dainese as a reliable sprinter (as mentioned he's not considered a Top3 sprinter in the team).

The Italian ES commentators today said DSM wasn't planning to have Dainese start here but they had two COVID cases at the last minute (don't know who) and replaced one of them with him. It still makes little sense but it's DSM...

Hvideberg, Leknessund, Milesi, Stork, Vandenabeele, van der Meulen and Vanhoucke were the seven riders they initially announced to start. Leknessund, Stork and Vandenabeele aren't here now, Poole (obviously, their best rider today ;) ) and Dainese came in instead.

According to UCI rules, they must have 5 riders at least to be allowed to start a 7-men event. So maybe they called Dainese to be on the safe side, in case another rider fell ill.

One of my biggest bugbears is when there is one climb with a tiny descent in the middle and they act like it's 2 different climbs for kom points purposes.

One of mine (okay, I didn't know it was a word) is people having problems with such benign things...

today's finish:

coming from the road on the top of the picture, they approach the speed skating arena through the roundabout, enter on the side, and do half a lap. Finish line is next to that "thing" in the middle.

Something must have happened, he was clearly not good yesterday.
edit: sick apparently.
was he expected/expecting to do well here? With Catalunya and Tour de Suisse as stated main goals, and a bit of a break after the first, it kinda made sense to me that he isn't quite at his best now.

I can't get over how dumb this finish is. First through the chicane onto the track should win the stage and that comes with about 200 metres to go. Will be extremely messy if it's any sort of sprint.

It certainly wouldn't have been worrying for him to get dropped. But he is still trying to see how far he can go, and he did say he wanted to do well here. Given his form in Catalunya, i expected him to be better yesterday, yeah.
