Someone had already awarded Hoogland the sprint silver medal on Wikipedia. That didn't quite work out (whoever added it obviously meant the the 1 km time trial, but still a funny mistake).

yeah, its weird BC have literally only just tweeted about it whilst the medal ceremony was on, so saw that,but must have switched over just after the race as Ive literally been watching the past hour in the background, but the darts tooks precedence thats why I missed it 😀

Niklas Larsen losing out on a medal, maybe more, because he decided to close the gap to the peloton instead of waiting and sprinting for points with Leitão and Torres (the race could of course very well have gone differently if he had scored those extra points). He would also have been champion if Bleddyn hadn't gone for those 10 points that only resulted in a top 10 position. My man has been robbed.

That was one of the most bitter 4th places I've ever witnessed. Not only does he lose a podium by getting overtaken at the finish line by a rider who isn't in contention for anything. He also loses the gold medal because of that (according to what I've read).

The only "mitigating circumstance" is that when you're more a less leading a group for the last five laps (which Larsen was forced to), chances are you're going to lose the sprint.

I felt so bad for Larsen, he bossed that race.
Hopefully he'll have his revenge today with Lasse Norman-Leth!

A nice gold medal for Acevedo and Mexico as well in the women's point race.

Madison ... a terrible discipline. Today's race is extremely chaotic. Some madison races may be good, but the concept often makes it hard to see how the teams are placed in relation to each other. It shouldn't be at the Olympics.

I was sure they hadn't got the scores right in the Madison, but those mistakes obviously had an impact on the racing. The Germans should keep their medal and then Denmark can get one as well

I did and I thought Denmark was 3rd right from the start or actually from the end (of the race). There are rules and just because they were not initially applied properly doesn't make it a bad sport. You really must have a problem with Baseball, Basketball and Figure Skating those really depend on what the officials see.

It's not about rules, it's about clarity. If the playing field is confusing, if the contestants are mixed between each other, if there is a high risk of not getting the result right for the organizers, then it's a bad concept. Almost all other track disciplines are easy to understand and follow, so why keep one that isn't?

Ignoring the mistake they made in the race, fwiw in person Madisons are surprisingly easy to follow who is doing what who's in the lead etc etc,and alot of fun to watch and see race.

What we've never managed to do is translate it on to tv, because the cameras follow the wrong things, the directors too busy trying to tell a story about something else and the commentators who are mostly just watching the same pictures we are get muddled and make more mistakes.

You'd think by now if we can put on screen graphics during a tour stage finish that shows who is who, it can't be impossible to create one that just shows who is leading the field round a velodrome. So when they cut to someone else you know they arent at the front and so on. Or even like a totem bar of the teams that's linked to transponders on the bikes that updates in real time like they have in motorsport

Firstly if Germany would have chased sooner Denmark would have not gotten the lap, but just like Belgium and GB they thought that their position was secure (hell Belgium was already celebrating) because none of the teams off the front at that point, Portugal, US, Denmark and Spain had anywhere near enough points to move ahead of them. Denmark was off the back off the field at the bell which made them eligible for the points in the last sprint but then managed to catch enough teams on the final lap to officially be counted as lapping the field. You just don't see that kind of finish every day! The officials had to go back and study the video to determine that Denmark had actually gotten the lap. Had Denmark moved into the field a half lap sooner or won the 10 points for the sprint but failed to gain the lap Germany would have been 3rd.

Yes, but that was because they hadn't been credited with that lap gain earlier on like they should have been, which was why they protested afterwards. But as I wrote yesterday, the Germans should have received bronze medals, too, due to this mistake.
