Greipel can win stages. Stages = not so many points. GC = a lot of points. Ergo, GC riders are more useful than sprinters.

Points in terms of what? If we're talking the WT ranking then who cares. But if we're talking the sporting value ranking then you get a lot more extra points from winning than from highish GC places.

All teams looking for a WT license?

That all depends on how good the GC man or sprinter is. Greipel has scored more world tour points so is more 'valuable' to lotto than Van Den Broeck. But if you have a successful GC man yes they are more useful.

@ingsve: aren't world tour points of utmost importance in regards to securing pro tour status the following season?

No, they aren't. WorldTour status is awarded according to the "sporting value ranking" that the UCI keeps a tight lid on. Of course WT races count more than Continental races, but in general, in this ranking winning (wherever) is better than placing in the lower top-10 in a GT without any top stage placings.

That's not based on the WT ranking per se but on other different rankings and the individual points you score don't transfer. They use an extended WT ranking where they add all the pro continental riders and then they give you a new score depending on how you place in this new ranking. For example everyone in the top 10 gets 100 points regardless of how many WT points they actually got. What all this means is that it diminishes a lot of the value of the WT points scored. However since the sporting ranking also gives out extra points for every win on top of the points you can in the combined rankings what this does to skew the importance away from GC and in favor of winning races.

sporting value ranking = who ever the UCI like then.

Although it is better than just awarding Pro tour status to the top ranked teams as it would be a closed shop.

Greipel in CQ rankings has 1200 points and VDB 400 points, in the official World Tour Greipel has 120 points, VDB has 71. End of discussion surely?

How many GCs has VDB won?

Even if GCs > stages, it's easier for a sprinter to win throughout the year than a GC rider, and Greipel gets results at more races than VDB too.
Okay, VDB is a bad example in this case. But look at Vacansoleil, who have had some good results in WT sprints and breakaways, but never a good GC. Their current position with two guys in the top-5 in Poland (and no wins) will likely double their WT score.

Danish media reported that Lotto is interested in Lars Bak and wants him to become a part of Greipel's train. Not sure they are right though, wasn't it Omega Pharma who wanted international riders like Greipel while Lotto wanted to focus on Belgian riders?

He probably didn't sign a one year contract, so his Omega-Pharma contract should still be intact ergo he's going to Quickstep. Unless there's a special clause in his contract about situations like this. QS would be a good fit as he'd have Boonen(he wouldn't mind to stop sprinting), Ciolek, Chichi and the Velits brothers in his train.

Yes but Quickstep already have boonen, Chicchi,Ciolek for the sprints. Too many sprinters. Like it or not Boonen still contests a lot of the sprints for QSI. I don't think it is wise for him to move to that team.

Mads Christensen re-signs with SaxoBank Sungard

Also dunno if this has been mentioned but the young talent Christopher Juul Jensen has a contract with Saxo

On the rumour side has there been, well rumours, that the new Omega Pharma Quickstep team is chasing Lars Bak.

ok - so what exactly is going to happen then with Omega-Pharma Quickstep?

I am assuming they will have to release a whole heap of riders?

There seems to be a few ins ... not many outs and 2 teams to fit into 1 roster.

So who is leaving?

It is likely that all the riders they don't want, will be picked up by Lotto...or filter through to the 3 Belgian ProConti teams (or even elsewhere).
