Sastre and Menchov had more points in 2009 & 2010 than Martin and Goss in 2010 & 2011 (so far), so I wouldn't rely on that...

Actually isn't the ranking they use actually closer to CQ ranking then the protour one (they use all protour, .hc and .1 races for the ranking)? In that case Martin and Goss have more points than Menchov and Sastre did

that's possible, I do not really know

there are other factors of influence anyway (besides the amount of reached points in whatever ranking), it was just meant as a side note

I see they got Vaitkus' nationality wrong, he is not Dutch.

An okay squad but when the best climbers are Weening and Lloyd it cannot be considered to be too strong.

Interesting the names not in that list

Henderson, Sutton, Hayman, Renshaw, Rogers

had all been listed as joining. Has been lots of talk of a clear out at sky, not sure where some of those riders are going to end up?

With HTC folding and Quickstep and Omega Pharma merge get the feeling that this transfer season is going to drag on

If Dean, Lancaster and Hushovd all leave Garmin then they really need to look for a good leadout for Farrar I think. The best they would have left is Murilo Fischer I think and I'm not sure how experienced he is at lead outs and whether his speed is enough for a final lead out. The problem is there isn't that many good experienced lead outs available out there.

I have a feeling that Greenedge made offers to an awful lot more than 28 riders during the course of the season. I certainly know that both Hendo and CJ were approached on more than one occasion

Wonder if Greenedge have just approached everyone, got agreement in principal on signing about 70 riders and then are playing it from there.

I would be incredibly surprised if that sydney morning herald list turned out to be the actual roster. If it is, its a right mish mash of riders. Its all well and good having a plan to have most of your riders from one country, but seems that they are signing riders based on nationality and not based on quality.

Although Omega Pharma are merging, its my understanding that Lotto are continuing? or did i miss something.

It's a very tough role to recruit for. A top lead out man is normally fast enough to be capable of winning some fairly decent races himself as a sprinter. So you have to offer them a fair bit more money than they'd earn as a main sprinter, and even then there are a lot of guys who would rather earn less money to have their own chances.

I'm guessing that HTC folding stirred things up with some new riders being available that they didn't count on.

Ya, the best is if you find someone who has already settled into the role of being a lead out and is happy with that. For example I would guess that Julian Dean doesn't have that many ambitions of riding for his own results anymore since he has been a leadout for something like 7-8 years now.

Yeah but assume that Lotto do not HAVE to take the riders left over from the Omega / Quickstep merge (i am under the impression that Omega are the holders of most of the riders contracts but may have that completely wrong) so means yet another team recruiting and some riders looking for teams. Although guess the quality riders will remain within the two new teams.

If the GreenEdge list is right then guess a few HTC riders may well end up at Garmin

Ya, he could be an option. He has experience of train work at least though I'm not sure how he is at final lead out.

Yeah he would be very good at being 4th maybe 3rd rider from Farrar, but I don't think he has the sprint speed to do a final lead out.

Where is Rasmussen going? I think he said he wanted to be part of Cav's lead out last year. I think he could pass as a final lead out for Farrar.

He's already signed for Garmin. Forgot about that. That's a little help at least.

Garmin will be ok with making trains for Farrar for the next year IMO.

A possible train for Tour de France:
Maaskant-Vansummeren-Rasmussen-Haussler-Farrar

And a possible "reserve train"
Vanmarcke-Hammond-Fischer-Kristoff-Farrar

But yeah, possible Sky's train looks way... "better"?..

Glad I checked here, I was about to post a rant about Flower Power and Martin in the GE thread. :D

I'd prefer Martin not being signed, at least until this notion of riding for Overall in GT's is dispelled. He's too good a TT to be mired with these delusions.

That list is worse than cyclingtips but better than a terrible blog I read. I highly suspect that the entire article is nothing more than just RG's musings/wish list.

Ah, I somehow forgot about Haussler as well. Though he's not much of a lead out. Though I guess he could learn. I would also not call Kristoff a lead out if it were to turn out that Garmin signs him. Kristoff has had some issues with navigating the sprints and getting in position so there would have to be some work done if you were to rely on him to bring Farrar in position.
