Yeah it was not very smart. I guess he thought Rota would drop and UAE would go 1-2, but it was clear Rota was probably the strongest rider in the race at that point.

I don't think rota could have won even if he closed the attack to polance, because he couldn't outsprint ayuso.

His biggest mistake was trying to attack five other riders from two teams, when he should have just sat on and saved energy.

Only if they hadn't been able to cooperate behind him, but I doubt UAE had refused to work.

Sure, but at that moment in the race, I think it's generally better to make moves than to respond to others. There's always the risk that cooperation fails and a gap suddenly gets big in a short time.

And I don't think he wasted much energy in attacking over the top of the climb.
