I'm guessing that even at 21, the prospect of going to jail isn't particularly appealing to your average, shaved-leg, 140 pound, 5'-7" white guy...

Indeed. It's really crappy that athletes have been forced into this situation. I feel for them.

Who wants to see this spectacle? Not me.

I do, especially if they cheated.

"The first has to do with the federal investigation into cycling. Last summer, I received a subpoena to testify before a grand jury. Until that moment I walked into the courtroom, I hadn't told a soul. My testimony went on for six hours. For me, it was like the Hoover Dam breaking. I opened up; I told the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. And I felt a sense of relief I'd never felt before -- all the secrets, all the weight I'd been carrying around for years suddenly lifted. I saw that, for me personally, this was the way forward."

That quote really creeps me out. 1984.

"Polish gazed up at his computer screen. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He finally loved the Clinic."

It is way past time for JV to do something comprehensive and positive for this sport instead of his usual blather.

Every time someone asks him about it, he cowers away from saying anything of substance. I wonder if it is the suits that keep him upright, or if he wears a back brace because he appears to have no spine in relation to the topic. Hopefully, at some point, we will find that he was helping all along. If not...

It's not really that simple though, which is why even Landis and Hamilton are at pains to emphasise the wide spread nature of doping whilst they make their claims. It's not the type of cheating most people would understand cheating to be. Landis described it as 'cheat of get cheated' and that's been the case in cycling for the last hundred years. None of these guys that have been forced to come forward - other than Landis who from that email posted tonight that was removed is on a mission to take down everyone who crossed him, including the clean team owners - wants Armstrong to go to jail. They know it would be a mockery to even take his wins away given the nature of the other teams at the time.

It's very unfortunate indeed that this has turned into a criminal matter and these athletes are forced to turn on each other about matters that occurred years ago, a very sad situation for the sport. Thank god Armstrong is not currently riding the ToC this year with all the overshadowing of the event that would cause again. We want cycling drama, not this crap.

Thanks Tyler. It was long overdue.

Did anything happened between Haven and Lance?? I read somebody mentioned something.

I'm still not sure what this means for Lance. Like most people I have my suspicions but the court requires a greater level of proof than what is being offered by the witnesses. While the amount of hearsay evidence keeps building, at the end of the day a million times nothing still equals nothing. Another proven liar makes allegations about him. So what? Unfortunately Tyler can't prove what was in Lance's fridge or what Lance was injecting... if he was injecting anything at all. Unless someone has some proper physical evidence somewhere the reality is Lance can just keep denying it.

Bikies & Bikers,

I admit that i am somewhat embarrassed to have been an Armstrong supporter .... since long before he had cancer. I was thrilled with his comeback ... in '99, with all his Tours, and with the last couple of years: and bummed when he crashed out.

And I sometimes wonder why it even matters if the peleton is doped - and isn't it obvious!?! (clearly, PEDs DO change the face of the race).

But, i also ashamedly admit, ... i am disgusted with Contador .... "i kissed a cow which had just eaten clenbuteral" !!! Jeez, .... are we idiots or do they just take for morons? Perhaps its a side effect of PEDs and succe$$.

When I see a bust in Spain involving thousands of pills & vials .... and amateur masters, coaches, and the occasional junior .... well, c'mon, it ain;t a secret anymore.

and missy giove facing jail for marijuana .... I am reminded of a Les McCann tune "Trying to make it real, ... Compared to What" !?! <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzvlivbptXk>.

"I Hate the Love of that Stinking Mutt" !!!

And to anyone here who thinks they have a right to insult of degrade my opinion .... just make it real !

witz

Something tells me that 60 Minutes has the smoking gun you're looking for.
Or just stick to the same tack that the lawyers do, eg everyone is lying except for Armstrong

This has not turned into a criminal matter. Our actions are either criminal or they are not. The only thing that has changed in the last year or so is that somebody is investigating certain allegations.

And I don't know what you mean about athletes being forced to turn on each other. Who forced whom? Subpoenas compel us to court, and the laws compel us to speak the truth. No person or thing forces anyone to change allegiance.

The only thing more disingenuous than Lance lying about doping would be him coming clean to "unburden his soul". If one day hell freezes over and he does admit, I have no doubt his decision will be a cold, calculated PR decision filled with crocodile tears.

I look forward to the moment when Lance goes on Oprah (who has a special show for him) and apologizes for lying to her and everyone else. That would be so hilarious!

Hearsay is information gathered by one person from another person concerning some event, condition, or thing of which the first person had no direct experience. When submitted as evidence, such statements are called hearsay evidence. As a legal term, "hearsay" can also have the narrower meaning of the use of such information as evidence to prove the truth of what is asserted. Such use of "hearsay evidence" in court is generally not allowed. This prohibition is called the hearsay rule.

For example, a witness says "Susan told me Tom was in town". Since the witness did not see Tom in town, the statement would be hearsay evidence to the fact that Tom was in town, and not admissible. However, it would be admissible as evidence that Susan said Tom was in town, and on the issue of her knowledge of whether he was in town.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearsay

what floyd and tyler are saying is absolutely not hearsay, as they are saying they witnessed these things personally

A witness is someone who has firsthand knowledge about a crime or significant event through his or her senses (e.g. seeing, hearing, smelling, touching) and can help certify important considerations about the crime or event. A witness who has seen the event first hand is known as an eyewitness. Witnesses are often called before a court of law to testify in trials.

A subpoena commands a person to appear. It is used to compel the testimony of a witness in a trial. Usually, it can be issued by a judge or by the lawyer representing the plaintiff or the defendant in a civil trial or by the prosecutor or the defense attorney in a criminal proceeding. In many jurisdictions, it is compulsory to comply, to take an oath, and to tell the truth, under penalty of perjury.

You are right Barnyard, hearsay is not the right term.
The meaning I was trying to convey is that they are allegations rather than physical evidence. The fact that these allegations have often come from proven liars unfortunately diminishes the impact of the allegations.

It doesn't matter what I think but I think the court will want to see a smoking gun won't they?

That "proven liars" team is getting ready to include one more testicle.

Um, you really don't know anything about the law or trials, do you? If they only got convictions where there was a "smoking gun," we would only need about 6 prisons for the whole US.
