We've all rightly focused on Pat and Hein, but a big question is how much can the UCI's head medical guy, Mario Zorzoli, be trusted. He was at the meeting Tyler talks about, where he was warned about transfusions, and he was also at the meeting, with Pedro Celeya, when Contador's steak defense was cooked up.

Outside Magazine has another article with this lead-in:

"News leaks about The Secret Race have vastly undersold its importance. Outside editor Christopher Keyes says Tyler Hamilton’s book is a historic, definitive indictment of cycling’s culture of doping during the Lance Armstrong era."

Unfortunately the link is 404-ed. Anyone found this article yet?

Wow, but honestly I guessed about that. Bruyneel and Lance worked on not only that UCI let them do any manipulations with doping, but also restricted other competitors in this regard. It partially explains why say Roberto Heras was flying in the Vuelta and Santi Perez set a record of TT power density that is not beaten and to this day. Damn it, apparently UCI frightened Mayo so much that he decided to try to ride the 2004 Tour being relatively clean. Poor basque... :( You know guys now I wouldn't be surprised to know that Contador was caught with the help of Lance.

After those informations about Hamilton and Mayo this theory that Armstrong was behind Contador positive test is not conspiracy theory anymore I'm afraid...

not at all.

and we wonder why any rider was afraid to cross him. all he would have to do is a quick call in to verdruggen and your life was destroyed. and riders knew he could do that.

what a completely disgusting farce fans have been watching over the years...

Well, the MO seems to be Armstrong tipped off the UCI, who looked closer at the chosen victim. Maybe they simply couldn't find anything against Garmin.

Yeah, true. I was just thinking back to Floyd's claim that although he doped, he was not taking testosterone at that particular time.

Still not buying the Contador +ve though, the UCI wouldn't damage their new golden goose or go to that much trouble to try to hide it.

yes. or as long as garmin had relatively poor results -- because they were (relatively) clean, armstrong was completely unthreatened by them -- no need for action.

no wonder he flipped out when vdv finished 4th (& apparently clean). no wonder -- with the help of ferrari and the complete protection of uci he thought his victorious return was a done deal.

Spanish GDP: $1.49T (47M residents) Recent scandals: Puerto
UK GDP: $2.43T (62M residents) Recent scandals: None

Sky promising to win the Tour in the next 5 years. Wiggins going to Sky in 2010. Sky meeting with ASO before they even had a WT license.

Sky’s meeting was no isolated incident though. They’ve presented in front of ASO since 2009, before their WorldTour licence had even confirmed, and according to a spokesperson for the team, training data, power profiles and clean competition was but one of the cornerstone of their showcase.

“We do it every year, and we actually meet with ASO twice a year. We started doing that in 2009 before we were really a team and we presented the five-year programme to them. We showed them what we wanted to do in terms of changing the face of the sport within the UK and then also showed them how the track programme had come about - our no stone unturned philosophy,” Sky’s spokesperson told Cyclingnews.

Contador would be throwing a spanner into the new, UK golden goose' works if left unchecked.

Races are being cancelled in Spain the economy is so beaten down. In the Euro zone, UK is one of the remaining powerhouses, relatively speaking. http://au.eurosport.com/cycling/spanish-races-could-go_sto3168872/story.shtml
Two of Spain's top bike races, the Tour of the Basque Country stage race and the one-day San Sebastian Classic, are in danger of disappearing because of the country's economic crisis, organisers said on Saturday.

An English speaking golden goose is far more valuable to ASO and the UCI than a Spanish speaking one.

Given how long the Clenbuterol positive took to be announced, I'll stick with my theory that they were attempting to bring Contador to heel, and he refused to comply. His time with Astana + Lance at the TdF shows he has backbone.

it really is a case of it being as bad as the very worst prognostications.

armstrong had better drugs, better doping doctor and the protection of the uci so he would never test positive (officially) and any opponent who got close would be held in check by the uci.

and it is clearer by the moment that cycling cannot be believed until the uci is completely cleaned up...

How is Riis still involved in the sport? if this doesn't bring him down...nothing will, unbelieveable
Well not good advertising of course, but honestly this was several years before he admitted doping abuse. It would be more shocking if he introduced Hamilton to Fuentes after his confession.

When Contador tested positive for clen Wiggins was barely an outside favorite for the Tour, there were probably 10 guys with a better shot at winning the Tour with Contador gone than him. The UCI must have some crazy prediction skills if they could have seen in 2010 that Wiggins would win the Tour this year (let alone having Froome on the podium, who was only known by the most die-hard fans in 2010).

There's no reason for a conspiracy why Contador was caught. He was tested everyday, clenbuterol was in his system, and he was caught.

What does that have anything to do with it? He didn't confess because the burden of lying all these years got to much for him. He confessed because D'Hondt wrote a book descibing the doping abuse at Telekom, and after several of his teammates from that time already confessed, he was practically forced to do the same. It was just a calculated move, I don't see how it would change the likelihood of him doping his riders after that 'confession'.

I seem to recall that the UCI didn't do anything about Contador's positive test for a long time. Then the lab leaked the information and the UCI was sort of forced to react.

Wiggins was 4th at the Tour in 2009, and joined Sky in 2010. Contador was pinged in 2010. Wiggins was on track to podium 2011.

Pat McQuaid knew Sky were going to win this year's Tour on July 11 - 11 days before the race had finished - good enough prediction skills for me.

How about this. How about the UCI identifies the best candidate for "golden goose". Somebody they think is credible, can carry the water, and, most important, who will bring in the most filthy lucre for them. Obviously baby Schleck was their man, but that didn't work out, as we know. They look for a fallback candidate and identify Wiggins. Feelers are sent out. The possibility is established. Armstrong is sent to talk to the candidate. Candidate is up for it. He is then hooked up with Ferrari. Voila, new golden goose.

Maybe that's a rough sketch, at least, of how it panned out.
