Heck, I'll even give you the NEAR END. But based on what Goober said, he indicates that he is a CYCLING insider, not a prosecutorial insider.

In other words, he'd have no way of knowing one way or another. Even if he were Lance, Rick Herman, Bill Stapleton, Johan Bruyneel, etc.

So my opinion is that he's using his claim of being close to Lance to try and establish credibility on knowing something about what Novi might or might not do. My point is that predicting about Rock Racing is one thing. Knowing what the feds are thinking is another (presuming the real insiders would even tell him the truth). So I still call BS.

Botany - you are 100% correct I do not know what the feds are thinking other than what I have heard. I have heard that no one to date has provided anything regarding Lance (other than Landis and Lemond) and offshore investigations had nothing to do with Lance or his past teams. That's all I know (or care to share). Not sure I would call it BS but have no problem with you calling it unsubstantiated.

I wish i could find the article we read during the tour last year where it detailed the new deal between nike/armstrong and livestrong for merchandise sales, whereby livestrong get paid x amount, and then once sales reach a certain point nike and livestrong share the profits with armstrong then being paid by nike as additional money on top of his normal endorsements (ie. lance profits from livestrong sales and the 28 jersey).

Was in one of the french papers we read while we were over there but damned if i can find it, was also in the times just before we left for paris. cant find that either :/

not for free, he received $34k(any evidence it wasn't more) for racing, full stop. what he does with it has no bearing on the fact that he received payment.

doesn't matter if he is the richest man in the world he received payment. therefore did not race for free as he said he would. therefore a lie. big difference between racing for the minimum wage and for free in the public's mind.

Any member of the public paying attention knew it was a lie a long time ago with all the appearance money he got. Multiple millions from the TDU and Giro. I think it's important to call Lance out on the particular salary issue but no matter how much Astana paid him it seems obvious that money was a factor in his return. In addition to appearance money his profile as a celebrity was once again elevated which led to better endorsement opportunities and undoubtedly raised the profile and earning potential of Livestrong.com.

So, are you implying that you have plaintiff-side info, or defense side? No need to share who said what. I've heard things not dissimilar to what you've written, but it so often seems that info comes from people who have a vested interest in that particular outcome.

It's very likely that few on Pharmstrong's side know what's going on with the Fed's. If anything substantial from the Fed's side made it back to Pharmstrong, that would set off a flurry of action and weaken the Fed's case.

Keep an open mind as to the range of possible outcomes though.

I'm fully prepared for a less-than-satisfactory outcome. Lance could go on and not even get indicted. He might even get a rare "absolution" press conference from the DOJ for all I know.

But my line of thinking seems to echo yours. It's odd that a guy claiming to have inner-circle access to Lance's conversations about 2009 contract earnings could then ALSO have connections that would let him form a quality opinion about the likelihood of criminal action. Even if this info was coming from Lance's criminal attorney himself, I'd not call that quality data. I'd sooner trust the word of a Kinko's night-shift guy who happens to date some girl who has a sister who is a court reporter in L.A.

+1. If he cant even get the guys name right, then its a pretty fair bet he knows very little about whats going on.

As far as payments to Lance .... no-one expects Lance to ride for free. He has earned his celebrity status and earned his appearance fees, endorsements etc the same as other top sportspeople.

What we (the fans) object to is being treated like a mushroom. Fed all this absolute garbage about how he is 'riding for free' just to promote cancer awareness, how its all for the 28 million, what a fantastic guy he is for doing this for the cancer survivors

It is obvious he is riding for the money ... for him, not for Livestrong. If he was really riding for cancer he would have
- charged Astana (or another team) a real racing fee and donated it to Livestrong
- donated his appearance fees
- pushed all of his vidoes and twitter traffic to the .org site and not his personal for-profit site
- not actually set up a personal for-profit site trading off the coat-tails of his foundation treating it like his own persona candy store
- assisted his foundation to set up a site (like the .com site) to make more money and trade off his status .... you know, like he claimed he is trying to
- not used his foundation as his personal cashcow

If he really was doing it for Livestrong, I personally would be cheering him on (doper or not).

But he isnt.

Man, there are some fairly immature posters on here...but getting back to the OP...I found this article and found it quite interesting. Since Lance never needs a salary and just 'donates' his time, also puts into perspective his spin on his 'done a lot of good' self-promotion.

I've confessed here before that at the start of the comeback, I was still a Lance fan, and until I got fed up with him at the training camp and ATOC, I read everything and blogged the positive bits.

Once the comeback training started, Lance reunited with Ryszard “Richie” Kielpinski, who once again became his personal soigneur. He was with him in Texas, TDU, training camps in Hawaii, TdF recon in France. It came out during the 2009 Giro when Astana was behind on salaries that Astana was the one paying for Ryszard to be away from his family and work solely for Lance. So not only did Astana pay money for Lance's salary, they also paid salary for an employee who most of the time was devoted solely to Lance. What other money did Astana have to pay out for Lances perquisites? And is something like a personal masseur, go fer, follow car driver, something that would be included in someone's income? If I went on a game show and won a free daily massage and other services, I'm pretty sure I'd be taxed for the prize amounts.

"I can pay his check, which will probably happen, but there's 30 other staff in the same position and is that frustrating? Yeah. Very. This is not fair."

I clicked a link in an article today and found out Lance has me blocked on twitter again, even though I stopped following during his media boycott at that Giro. I think that whoever takes care of that for him was bugged by me talking about him being under contract but wearing Livestrong and Mellow Johnny's kit everywhere instead of Astana.

Wait how come he didn't know he was or how much he was getting paid? Surely he had signed a contract with Astana and the UCI were in possession of that contract? Isn't that a prerequisite for riding in races?

If it wasn't sorted out until the end of the year how did he race? Seriously these journalists who asks these questions need to be more aware of the UCI rules and on the ball when asking questions.
