Well, for Freire it's not normal inasmuch as he's still having trouble breathing properly at the moment. As soon as his respiratory tract opens up, we all know Freire is a force to be reckoned with.

I thought he said the breathing was much better? It's normal for him to be completely and totally invisible in the weeks up to a big win, I just mean.

Yeah, with Freire you never know. He was terrible yesterday but today he could feel fine, contend the sprint and win. He gets in shape very fast.

It's probably better, but not optimal, as he had to let the peloton go yesterday due to breathing problems.

Ah, ok. I didn't know he let go due to breathing problems, I just figured he let go due to being Oscar :)

Gerrans needs a lesson in public relations given a number of people think he shouldn't have been there in the first place. Remember he was supposedly selected for a leadership role.

His comments after Team Sky's withdrawal from the Vuelta.

"To be honest, I really think I have to reassess my aspirations for the Worlds because I know how critical the Tour of Spain is for that preparation. It's definitely lowered my expectations of what I'll be able to achieve at the world championships but I still think we've got a fantastic team with Matt Goss and Allan Davis getting better and better every day here at the Tour of Spain. If it comes down to it they might really be the main guys."

Robbie will choking on his Corn Flakes reading that one.

Gerrans is a little ****wit! I wish mcewen was in there as he should be in there instead of cooke. Gerrans gives up when it looks a bit hard. That's why he will never win any big races. His performances in the classics were **** especially after all the "hype" around him.

Your probably closer to the mark than I. His team over rates him and I think he does as well. My rant was a tad harsh.

Slovakia selection:
Peter Sagan (Liquigas), Martin Velits (HTC) en Peter Velits (HTC)

Peter will slaughter them all. U can already smell the fear in the peloton.

Realistically, there's no way he can cope with the distance. He did both M-SR and P-R this year if I'm not mistaken, and naturally those were just too long for him. But the course is pretty much perfect for him though, so you never know...

Though I agree Sagan making it over this distance with the lead group is unlikely, he has done well in longer races this season. In Philadelphia, he was second to Matt Goss in the 251 km race.

At that time, his form was peaking coming off of Romandie and California. After that, his form dropped off as evidenced by the fact he dropped out of the TdSuisse and TdPologne very early, but he has been doing well in some Italian one day races lately. I suspect he'll peak again for worlds and just might have a chance...

some guys in portugal say that the portuguese team should focus on helping manuel cardoso since he will be coming from the vuelta in good form.

the chances of him getting a podium position are very low but i kind of like the idea of the portuguese team start focusing on one guy and training the work for guy X method. cus i am pretty sure that with a hilly course and a more experienced rui costa, we will have a chance at gold(yes i know the likes of gilbert, cunego and shleck will be around but rui costa is a good hilly routes rider, he should prolly focus on the hilly classics instead of grand tours in the next couple of years untill he gains the needed experience to ride a GT for a good place the the general)

The pace, parcours and field in the Worlds is>>>>>>>>Philedelphia.

Final three for the Netherlands: Koen de Kort , Steven Kruijswijk, and Laurens ten Dam.

So the team will be those three guys + Koos Moerenhout, Jos van Emden, Lars Boom, Karsten Kroon, Sebastian Langeveld, and Niki Terpstra.

Not an awfully strong selection, if you ask me. And Koen de Kort... seriously, WTF? Leo van Vliet, you are a strange person.

can any1 post the number of riders each team takes?

iirc portugal can only take 3 riders.

and i know there are many national teams and everything but this system does favors the strongest teams. uci should find a way to go around this.

Van Vliet is a total @ssclown
What a complete moron.

Words cannot describe how big the fail of his selection is. Even a mentally challenged person could make a better one.
Seriously. Ten Dam and Kruijswijk on this course??? They are not classic riders let stand on a course like this...

Hoogerland, Tjallingii and Maaskant would be far more logical. Yes Hoogerland and Maaskant didn't have good seasons. But if you select Kroon, you might as well give them a shot. At least both Hoogerland and Maaskant have shown previous years they can ride top 5 in 250km+ classics (Hoogerland Lombardia, Maaskant RVV+PR)

Van Vliet is an idiot.

Belgian selection

Time-trial:
Dominique Cornu, Stijn Devolder

Roadrace:
Frederik Willems (Liquigas)
Mario Aerts, Jan Bakelants, Philippe Gilbert, Jürgen Roelandts, Greg Van Avermaet (Omega Pharma-Lotto)
Stijn Devolder, Kevin De Weert (Quick Step)
Bjorn Leukemans (Vacansoleil)

Reserves RR in case something happens to one of the above: Dries Devenyns, Leif Hoste, Nick Nuyens , Jelle Vanendert

Gilbert the clear leader, Leukemans and Devolder as possible back-ups and the rest really strong riders of which some can go along well above the 200K mark.

No surprises I think with Boonen injured, Jurgen VDB stating that he won't be ready and Hoste, Nuyens out of form. Does anyone know why Van Summeren is not there?
