hmm

guess that means he was talking like a poster when he responded to CN threads and didn't think through the consequences of his actions.

It probably means we wont see him much any more until all the evidence is out in the open 8(

JV, dont be disheartned by this, we all appreciate you taking the time to offer inside insight into all this.

I think it means that anyone who thought JV was all just PR talk and not really actively anti-doping, or who openly quetioned his motivations for hiring former dopers, were proven categorically wrong with those posts.

I believe the "I'm just a dumbass" is 100% facetious.

JV thinks EVERYTHING through. Plus, he had ample time to revisit the posts on the off chance he had posted in haste...

+1

we're a bunch of conspiracy frogs, and the JV scorpion is asking us for one more ride across the river.

ETA: this thread is now findable by searching for the sentence above, in "s - that's about 5 minutes from post to index

One can only assume that the information forwarded by JV is going to become public knowledge at some point.
I can't think of another reason to out riders who have never admitted to doping.
It's a way of controlling the message.

As a tin-foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist this is perhaps Benson and CN punishing us for criticising them for being toothless when it comes to dealing with dopers by 'showing us' what happens if you rock the boat too much and ask too many questions.

I think the root of the problem is that society still hasn't fully acknowledged that much of its communication happens through social media, and they're not considered private even though this is very much the modern equivalent of eavesdropping on a conversation in the street (i.e. a public place where anybody could hear you) and running a story with it. We either give up the notion of privacy completely, or we acknowledge the new scenario social media have created.

I don't think JV's tweet meant he had calculated all this. On the contrary, I think it's pretty literal, "Oops, got carried away. Should've known better. I'm an idiot".

Ah, but the issue is the illusion of it all.

Wrapped in the comfort of pretending that the outside world is just that, plenty of things get passed around here, and other forums, that otherwise wouldn't (as I think you just proved with your own anecdote). Now CN has thrown a wrench into things.

Of course the rest of the world can see what goes on here. But are they always watching? The sheer volume of threads and posts provides at least a small degree of perceived safety, if nothing else, for one's opinions, even when the poster is as widely recognized as JV. But not anymore, apparently.

And why, exactly, did Tom Danielson receive the singular honor of making the headline on the CN homepage?

I repectfully disagree. It is absolutely not akin to eavesdropping.

To run with that analogy, a public forum is far less eavedropping on a conversation in a bar, and more akin to going up on stage in that very same bar on open mic night.

However, Vaughters' more considered postings can make us revisit initial thoughts, and if not wholly reconsider, then modify our original positions taking in more information or the perspectives of others.

I certainly think back to Vande Velde's criticism of Patrik Sinkewitz in 2007 and the implication of a desire for physical harm to befall him and see that with a bit of a sneer.

The problem for people like JV contributing to this forum is that a little knowledge can be a terrible thing. We know enough to be a nuisance without knowing enough not to have to ask. Or, alternatively, we know enough about the dots to join them without knowing enough to know when we shouldn't.

C'mon people. Let's get real here.

JV didn't pop on in one of the 1,000 nondescript threads and throw out some obfuscated and tangential comment on why he did or didn't get along with Thor Hushovd.

He explicitly stated, under no duress, that three current professional cyclists, all former team mates of Lance Armstrong, and all current members of his ProTour team have a history of doping, and went in to some detail on one of them.

The "Oops, I might have let just a teeny weeny bit too much informtion slip" idea is farcical (and absolutely not what I think his position is).

Well at least the French won't find out about it. They don't read or speak English. :D

.

Guess what, some of us bretons do (read, write, speak English).
(As you should know since Granville is not very far from Brittany).

Let's consider the generation of my chidren and nephew/nieces. 16 young people.
2 are perfectly bilingual
5 are quite proficient in English
7 of the others have had their 7 years of English, but would rather read in French
2 are desperate cases.
Of course, besides English some of them speak fluently/write Breton, Basque, German, Spanish, Italian, Latin, Greek.
Back to topic,

What I'm really waiting for is JV's revelation of his estimate of his VO2 max on his epic Ventoux climb in the Dauphiné in 1999 and also his estimate of how much of a boost he got from EPO (he seems to have hinted at 10%)

...and then CN taking a recording of that open mic performance and releasing it as JV's latest single!

I have to bow out now. I may be back for more tomorrow...

I suppose it's still CN's forum and they can do what they want with what's posted here, but I fear there's a breach of trust here, if they didn't approach JV to ask for permission.

I'm worried that this will cause JV to shy away from forums forever. Then again, I suppose he only posts stuff he doesn't mind going public.

Agreed! I don't think some plain speaking from JV is going to stop. He's got an anti-doping brand to cultivate and if he sees another opportunity to build on it I think he'll take it. Conversely, if he's got to suppress some anti-doping controversy, I think he'll be back for that too.

It's CN's site, more power to them for sifting through the threads to put a story together. I don't think you guys understand how lazy journalists can be.

Funny story. Twice, I called out various riders out on the forum, not for doping but for for general jackassy behavior. BOTH TIMES they called me on it, and worse, realized who I was? I'm convinced about 75% of the peloton reads this forum almost in its entirety, and the rest just do a name search to see if anyone's talking about them.

I'm not really sure what Vaughters expected talking smack about those guys. Of course, he didn't say anything that anyone paying attention didn't know already.

I'ts not that I think CN are outing a big secret, just that they could have done it in a better way than copying and pasting his comments without the neccesary context.

Hopefully JV will come back into the forum after he has apologized to all the ex postals for not allowing them to tell their mommies before they read the news online. To Dekker for spilling the beans that he really is'nt the arrogant *** everyone thought he was. (Arrogant *** could get good sponsorship contracts, look at Lance:rolleyes:).

And finally to JJ who perhaps thought the omerta was holding him back with JV and not his "winning personality".

I am stunned, just outed three of his riders live in the clinic, this is huge, wonder if he had been drinking, before the reasoned decision too, this is going to run and run, can't believe it....

So....The Clinic just became the story. Nice.

I am sure Vaughters has spoken about all of this with Danielson, DZ and CVV - I am sure there are no delusions that their past would stay hidden forever. Frankly, their past is a horribly kept secret.

It's so strange....I never liked Floyd until he "came out" and I never really cared for Vaughters until he "came out" - although Vaughters has been growing on me over the last few years with his willingness to get into some tough discussions with fans on Twitter.

So Vaughters - kudos. You kinda rock.

I'm stunned that he said it yesterday and it's just now gaining traction.
