He only got a couple of abrasions for which he's taking antibiotics. Not that surprising that he looks a bit worse after taking antibiotics
Antibiotics and doing a GT? Not a good combination wouldnt you agree?

Disappointing day but those climbs look great and matter little. Only an extra 10s. Won't panic about him till the Pyrenees. Not sure how Astana left him with 1 rider from the start of the climb and then 0 support when he was struggling. He obviously wasn't feeling great today since he was never really close to the front for it.

Maybe he wasn't feeling bad until that moment(like Contador on Huy), otherwise Fuglsang, Kangert or Scarponi wouldn't take it slow on the last climb.

I rewatched the final climb. Nibali actually survived the steep part in front, within the best 10. And was still there until 700m to go. When Vuillermoz and then Froome accelerated he suddenly came to a halt on the flatter, late part of the climb. Looks like he had blown himself into red to follow on the steep section and then had nothing left in the final 600m..

Re: Nibali discussion thread

Nibs is obviously not going to win this tour going up. It means if he wants to win he has got to blow the race apart at some stage. He has nothing to lose so things could start to really kick off.

So.. r we left with just 3 contenders?

Wow. U think BOTH nibs and contador are already done for?
Still counting on Pino?

 unfortunately, nope.

liking the possibilities of barguil (and bardet still) - not for podium, but to surprise.

if bmc kill it as i expect them to do in the ttt - tjvg becomes a strong podium option.

my take is froome will either dominate and crush the tour or he will crash and burn.

quintana is my only sure thing for the podium at this point. i think third week will be great for him. two mins down is really very little for quintana. if there were the normal amount of itt kms, he would have lost tons more. the question is if the first week has taken it out of him. hinault's way of dealing with the colombian team was to run them ragged on the flats and destroy their climbing legs. it worked. however, i think quintana is a different beast.

having said that, quintana will never get a tdf better suited for him. if he can't win this one, i cannot seem him winning any - unless they further distort the parcours to be just for climbers.

He just claims that the finish wasn't suited to him. Honestly, if he can't hold on to a group of 20 riders then he isn't winning the Tour. He won't even podium.

Nibafail!
Should've done the Giro and left this Tour to Aru.

Can you imagine Tommy V Jr. at this swaying from left to right on the road? Aru isn't Giro ready never mind Tour ready.
The parcours at the Tour should've suited little angle a little more.

That said, you are probably right: The Vuelta is his best shot this year. There's still a tt and Landa though.

Nibali seems to be weaker than expected. Its a bit worryfing and suprising.

I think Landa stole his climbing legs :p

He should be fine by tuesday though, i'm never writing off a rider like nibali

He blew up. Nothing left in the legs, no explanation why. A bad day, hopefully the only one. Tomorrow is decisive, he can't afford to loose any more time.

Must have been a hunger knock. Outside of the effects of the crash, which didn't seem to hamper him all day, I can't think of any other reason.

Hopefully he got it out of his system, and he'll be firing on all cylinders Tuesday.

Really surprised today.
Everybody is calling it a bad day, but I believe there is more to it. He is not in top shape, and he knows it. That's why he's been so nervous this firsat week. Unusual for him. I hope he can prove me wrong on Tue, but I don't think I am. Nibali's Tour will come to an end on Tue afternoon.
