Quintana for sure, but Nibali showed good form in the Vuelta, surely?
I still want to know what Nibali was worth on the Angliru without that crash
Probably would have blown himself up and ended up at the same place. No way he could have gained a lot of time on Froome on a day when Froome and Poels just rode every other gc contender (except Bertie obviously) of their wheel.

Not wild about Nibali's (apparently retracted) comments about Froome's AAF. Can't imagine a scenario where something similar couldn't happen to Nibali.

That being said, I never, ever want to go against Nibali when a GT is on the line. He has obviously not won all of them, but the increased likelihood of his adversaries finding misfortune makes it too risky to feel confident it is worth the effort.

Playing the "what if" game for a second ...

If Froome wasn't in the Vuelta do we reckon Nibali would've finished first?

Or would the dynamic be so different that Contador would've won?

That would have been an epic battle for the GC between Nibali and Contador. I wish we could have seen it.

Tough to say, but I think he’d have struggled with Contador as Bahrain were obviously nowhere near the strength of Sky that shut down most long range Contador attacks.

Contador would also not have lost quite as much time on that stage in the first week without Sky drilling it on the final climb to put minutes into him. Would have been a fair old battle between Nibali and Contador IMO.

Most certainly IMO. Contador was stronger than Nibali was. Without Sky, Im pretty sure Contador would have won!

Good joke :)
if I remember correctly, contador was even behind Kelderman (yes only for last stage, but he was) and Zakarin so how you can say something like that, race would be different and it is just speculation but only real reason that Contador was only one minute behind Nibali is that he felt before angliru

Advertising revenue on Eurosport would have been down.
The RAI are going to be real disappointed in the giro missing CF
- they were becoming so sycophant about it

Ah, I think you've got a bit of a selective memory. Let's not forget that throughout week two Contador was dropped on any climb longer than 5km. And sometimes by quite a margin.

This. Contador was way better on muritos but on long climbs Nibali was one level above Bertie. That said, I think Nibali would have struggled to control the race with his weak team. However while we don't know if Nibali would have won the race without Froome we know for a fact that he didn't win the race with Froome. So assuming he is clean (which is ofc anything but certain but thats another completely different topic) he has every right to be angry.

Speaking about Contador, if Froome gets stripped of the Vuelta Berto would lose his podium spot because of the few secs he gave up in Madrid.
At the end of the penultimate stage to the Angliru he was 4 secs ahead of Keldermann, in 4th place.
