VALENCE - The Tour lost a lot on Thursday night in the turmoil of Alpe d'Huez. Much more than a rider, much more than the fourth in the overall classification, much more than a former winner (and the only one to defeat Chris Froome and Sky in 2014) or one of the most serious opponents of the British duo Froome-Thomas. The Tour has lost a spirit, the Tour has lost a soul. Vincenzo Nibali is one of those rare riders whose stature far exceeds his record of achievements. His panache and aura are not only measured by the number of major victories: the three major Tours (France, Italy and Spain), the Giro di Lombardia, Milan-San Remo, to which we could add a 2012 Liège-Bastogne-Liège whose result smells of adulterated vodka (*).

I know we can't really play this game in pro cycling—Nibali's pizza might have been adulterated too for all we know—but that's a funny quote.
