Teams & Riders Vincenzo Nibali discussion thread

Lo Squalo will soon arrive in Spain and will stay there for quite some time. Here are the next races before the Vuelta:

Prueba Villafranca, 25 July, Vuelta Castilla y Leon, 27 - 28 July, Clasica di San Sebastian 30 July and Vuelta Burgos 2-6 August.
San Sebastian is a race I wish he could add in his palmares before retirement, first participation in 12 years I think.

It's a good number of racedays to build form for the vuelta.

With all this preparation exclusively in Spain and now with Lopez most likely out of the picture I kind of have the feeling he will ride the Vuelta as a GC man. Which of course is not so good.
Plus TT bike training in recent Livigno training camp.

It's a strange decision to potentially compromise that end of season form. But Vincenzo know his body and his ambitions.

Have you heard anymore about possible postponement of retirement until roubaix/Giro 2023?

In the latest episode of Squalo TV he said there are many options on the table for 2023 and road racing is the least probable, but he didn't rule it out.

I am thinking guys. If Vingo is the new Froome, and Pogi the new Contador... who is gonna be the new Nibali? Is it even possible for such a rider to exist?

You know the answer. Just stumbled upon some cycling statistics which, if accurate, prove Nibali's consistency and the quality of his timetrialing during Grand Tours. Here's top five for active riders with most top 10 in ITTs in GTs.

18 | Nibali
16 | Froome
15 | Dumoulin
13 | Roglic
11 | Valverde

And a nice picture from the Mortirolo 2019 to start the hype for the second part of the season.

That is a fascinating statistic. Well done to find that.

I wonder how much the teams current situation in the UCI ranking factors in this considering they are rock bottom of the Pro Tour teams going into final week of TDF. This maybe a factor in both his GC ambition and staying on till the Giro.

Yeah, 'but he only won the Giro 2019 because Nibs was obsessed with Roglic'. You mean remarks like that, that are true?
Like fans of other riders will tell you Nibali won most of his races because the best riders crashed out or stuff like that.
Same narrative.

That being said, both Nibali's climbing and time trialling at peak were superior to Carapaz', no doubt about that.

Indeed. Actually Nibali is (rather was) the single multiple GT winner since the old days who bagged a few monuments (3). Pogacar is the next one.
The difference is that, with the exception of this 2022 Tour de france, Pogacar has been the strongest, the dominant force and could win in most scenarios.

Nibali was the never the strongest from a physiological perspective, at least in the monuments, but demonstrated greatness in a way that most riders could never do.
