One thing that I really liked is that there were a lot of kids! really nice job! this sport can't survive without new talents! Keep it up!

That looks like a great race.

I'm actually interested, what has been the influence of Vino and the Astana team on cycling in Kazachstan? Is it becoming better known and more loved, and more importantly, are more people picking it up as a sport to do themselves?

Great to see...

Reminds me of Cuba, somewhat - with their still-functioning (though decrepit) Soviet-style sports schools, and dozens of little kids racing aboard mismatched, prehistoric, ill-fitting bicycles - but having fun and being developed into potential Pan Am medalists.

I've been thinking about the shocking departure from Astana of 'Berto, under a black cloud of dodgy radios, and wondering what the real reason is for his separation - b/c even the Kremlin could plant a more-convincing excuse in the media than "equipment."

I believe in karma though, and know that in the end, Vino and his team will find a new champion to fight for in the GT's, and the Kazakhs will have the last laugh. In fact, as Vino once told me, "He, who laughs last, laughs best. He who laughs at Vino … dies." :p

it's interesting - we've got really elite class cycling team but popularity of cycling is not so big in comparison with football, ice hockey or boxing and wrestling. And percentage of people who are aware about Astana team or results of any races is very small.

of course it's connected with a problem that bicycles themselves are not popular, cycling drive is realy unsafe on streets and roads. The Astana projects unfortunately is still much more important for image of Kazakhstan outside, than for image of cycling sport inside of country.

But it's big and boring topic :)

Pretty much the way it is everywhere....except maybe in very select parts of Europe.

hey i just caught up with that link, really nice to see all those kids kitted up....
are there any junior teams to speak of ? and im assuming the kid with the flowers and the flat screen won, nice ........:)

not so much. Last TdF was presented only with Tour Diary on one of channels, another local one had one hour's reportages but not live.

But we had Tour of Romandie, it was big surprise because usually it's possible to watch only by Internet-translation. We hope that with Vino's comeback we will have some classics translations next year

Now we have quite big presentation on big races, even on TdF astanafans were really visible. We hope to recruit more and more Kazakhs in Europe - a lot of them just started to discover that it's great to be on races show.
Have a look - one of our guys was inside with the team, and big group was on the roads.

Eurosport have rights for showing all big races in Kazakhstan in cable. It's about 30% of all country.

National broadcasters show live only Vuelta 2008
