Problem is the late announcement about the stage being shortened didn't give the peloton (or what was left of it) time to claw back time.

I agree--the peloton gave the break a gap and then found out that the stage had been shortened by 60 km when the break was only 10 km from the new finish. Ridiculous.

Although, to be fair, the peloton probably didn't have much interest in chasing regardless of where the finish was, given the conditions.
