gesink dropped by VDB2

that july calender on lotto's bus is really working wonders for VDB :p

you were all pretty early on the conclusion when in the end gesink only finished, what, 4 seconds behind?

Consedering how he was yesterday and how he was today already a huge difference, plus beating Wiggins too.

Time to give Gesink some respect he deserves after today and retract on your earlier statement in this topic :)

Congrats to Martin too, but he will have to ride well on stages 6 & 7 to keep the lead.

Fantastic ride. Delighted (since he's my favourite rider). Don't know why he didn't push it till the end, he did the same in Tour of Poland and lost the GC by 3 seconds iirc.

Interesting, It seems that multiple long range attacks are very difficult for Sky to deal with. If they respond too quickly they throw their PRM 'skytrain' out of whack and if they leave it too late then they let them get away.

Katusha's problem was that if they had helped keep the pace high early on to catch the break, Sky would have had at least one person left at the end and JRod would not have managed to gap Wiggins.

J rod can gap Wiggins any 9% gradient.....question is, can he keep the gap?

At the time, I thought Katusha rode too defensively today, but now on reflection, I'm not so sure.

They can still win this race with 1 good ride whereas Sky can't get on the podium unless someone else crashes out.

Sky can still win this race. The last two stages are solid opportunities to take time. Sir Wiggo, the defending TdF Champ, should not give up at this point. Champions never do.

Idd, Gesink not bad at all today. Actually VDB should've been much better. The Belgian's condition has been great since San Luis and I haven't read anything about him having been ill.

But D_T, if I were you I'd still not have high hopes of Dutch Giro success. Top 5 should be his goal, or else he can only disappoint again.

talking with hindsight is always great ;)

Not for Wiggo.

well, I disagree. Sky have already proved they can drop riders on a stage like this:

Aggressive racing is needed and why would a rider such as Wiggins just give up? Training? Keep 4th position in the GC? Anything but trying to win seems pointless to me.

in fact Vdb rode stupid in hindsight. First when he joined Gesink he barely did any pulls. Riding 'smartly' I suppose. Then he attacks, only to hold a gap of 4 seconds for 7 remaining km... if he was smart, he would look back to see he isn't gaining anything, and work together again...
Not sure what he gained by that attack other then to ride alone for 7km as a result

I agree that he should keep trying but he has no chance to win. No way they drop Nairo, Danny, and Purito on the stages that are left. I'll take a Wiggo avatar if that happens.

Podium is still possible though. While I expect him to at least hold on to a top 3, Martin isn't the most consistent rider in the world.

quite a great stage(too bad for valverde)
strong ride by martin, and a nice duel of jurgen and gesink, they both read their thread here a lot i guess
sky train ran out of fuel it looks like.until criterium international that is :)

rujano only 28 minutes back...nice

Really?:( Was it snowing today too? Hope he can at least have a decent second half of the season.
