Didn't watch, but could Bernal have won the GC without this crash?

Only if he had targeted this race, but he didn't :( Only Valverde did of the whole peloton

The top 10 says enough.

History of the race and list of winners also...

History of the race means very little when the race clearly lost a lot of prestige over the years (not that it ever had much mind you). Paris-Tours used to be called the sixth Monument, but now it's clearly behind Omloop het Nieuwsblad, Strade Bianche, Gent-Wevelgem and the Amstel Gold Race.

Spain has always had the least prestigious races of the traditional cycling countries:

Belgium, France and Italy have way more important races than Spain.

It actually gained prestige in 2005 when become a part of the Pro Tour. Volta wasn't part of Super Prestige Pernod, unlike it's rival race Setmana Catalana, but it never stopped biggest names of the peloton to take part in it and eventually win (Anquetil, Merckx, Ocana, Gimondi, Moser, Kelly, Indurai, Jalabert, Heras, Purito...). That trend clearly continues today, cause World's No.1 rider is more than happy to attend this race, and more than capable to win it :D

GVA didn't win Gent-Wevelgem.

Even The Great Ocean Race is WT by the way.

I didn't say World No.1 in absence of the real one, I said THE REAL NO.1.

And what about that Ocean race?

Nibali isn't riding here and Contador has already retired.

You make no sense.

Nibali never was world's best rider, and Contador is retired indeed. You got that right (surprisingly :surprised: )

That doesn't make any sense. You said it yourself, Contador is retired? Then he can't be the worlds best. As much as i hate to say it then Valverde is probs the best.

I know you like to downplay the achievements of Valverde, but you honestly believe GvA is the world nr.1 rider of the peloton? Or are you just basing that on last year's WT ranking, normally you don't give a damn about that ranking. Valverde btw currently is the word nr. 1.

I wouldn't consider GvA a top 5 rider, although it is extremely difficult to compare different types of riders.

The number one rider is the one that wins the most big races. Tour, Giro, Vuelta, Monuments, the WC and the Olympics. Nibali won the last 3 big races: Vuelta, Lombardia and Milan-San Remo. ;)

As for Valverde, due to his clinic issues we will never know where his true talent lies, no matter what his fans claim.

So it's Froome or Nibali, but how do you get that to mean Greg?

He won the WT ranking last year. The number one rider is only decided after the end of a season. This isn't tennis.

Interesting, so who was number one rider - the best rider in the world - for the three seasons prior to that?

I never said I think Greg was the number one rider. I just fail to see under which criteria Valverde is the current number one rider.

Not according to any ranking I know.

Best rider has always been the rider that wins the most big races.

I would say the Vélo d'Or is usually given to the number one rider of the year, although it's not a perfect method.

Ignoring Froome, no rider won more than one big race last year.

The World number one rider is done by points. It's a formula. Last year GVA won it, the year before Sagan. in both 2104 and 2015 Valverde won it.

To determine the worlds number 1 rider it's done by points. Here are two articles which explain how those points work since they were changed before the 2016 season.
