Valverde doesn't have anything like the sprint speed he had 10 years ago

That said, he mentioned at Pais Vasco last year that what he usually does in these finishes is not actually try to win, just surf wheels of sprinters all the way to the line to make sure he's not behind if there's a gap in the pack. Like he did yesterday or in all the Pais Vasco stages last year.

And can we mention that yet again McCarthy did his usual thing of sprinting all over the road? How long until someone breaks a leg because of him?

When he won a race earlier this year and I posted something like "Finally he didn't intentionally ride into people's way" I wasn't being flippant, it was literally the first time I've ever seen him sprint remotely fairly.

But I guess it's the way it always goes in this sport. Wait till someone gets hurt, only then do something about it
I think you need to go back more than 10 years. No way was he faster in 2008 than he is now.

It's not surprising that this guy can't sprint in a straight line...

Lol, just watched the finish. Was sure he was about to finish 5th or something like that, he was in pretty poor position actually, but then just effortlessly went into the left side of the road and won. Like, what the ***. This guy is just too good. <3

I don't remember that, but I remember Kwiatkowski being quite angry at him

Yeah, I just found it. It was Valverde, Kwiatkowski and Luis León who had insulted him and almost got physical with him after the stage three of last year's PV.

Not the first time Valverde tries intimidating other cyclists.

Yeah, just before I found that link, I found an assessment by Brian Holm (previous to last year's LBL) who said that except for Tom Boonen, he had never experienced a rider being so universally respected and well-liked in the peloton due to his politeness and respectfulness despite him being a megastar as Valverde.

He said that no one didn't like him (both riders, DS's, auxiliaries) and that was an extreme rarity in the world of cycling.

Additionally, he said that the whole peloton had been on the neck of McCarthy after that particular incident, because one simply doesn't treat Valverde that way.

He (El Pisti) talks about some feud with Gilbert 12-13 years ago. Gilbert complained about Valverde and Pereiro I think, some trash talk between them about Madiot's (Gilbert's boss at the time) comments on how Spanish riders and teams are doped.

@Blanco

I know. I've seen him bring that up before.

@Crash

It's not a lie. You're welcome. Google Translate is your friend. Btw, McCarthy and Valverde seemed to have buried the hatchet, and they greeted each other for quite a while after the stage today.

I'm not saying you lied about Brian Holm, I'm just saying this whole narrative of Valverde being so respectful to other riders is a lie.

As for Brian Holm, google his past.

Not if it makes riders attack on col de Bracons, rather than wait for the final climb. :cool:

Also, 70 km/h wind gusts, that's pretty serious.

"Nairo, today you are part of the sprint train"

That's what I thought it would look like, or at least something similar. So we hand the stage to Valverde tomorrow? It looks like it should be a small group of climbers coming to the finish together.

No way the climb is hard enough to shed a lot of the peloton.
