unfortunately vuelta will always lack stages with three or four big passes before the mountaintop finish.
the stages that i like:4,14,15.
they should finish it with a big flat 50 km ITT.i still think it's wrong that in grand tours nowadays of 3500 kms just 40 are ITTs.
overall it's a vuelta that can be won again by a guy like nibali.

Are they really necessary?
IMO they don't add anything to the race, except to wear down the group.
Both La Tour and La Vuelta sites are the same ASO design.
La Tour site says the TDF has 23: 2, 1 and HC climbs
La Vuelta site has 46 "mountain passes". This probably includes 3rd cats, but still.............

True that so far, the 2010s are not the decade for the big, diesel ITTer.

Those stages suit a different kind of rider, a diesel like Carlos Sastre for instance. And I think Anton's nerves would like a smaller group at the base of the final climb.

for me yes.one of my favourite moments when watching cycling is to see an elite group forming one or two climbs before the final one.tactics can be used efficiently in those moment.if you have balls of course.

stages like that :_______________________________/ i don't like them at all.maybe 4-5 years ago when they were racing the last climb possessed style but nowadays just the last two km are exciting.

Any reason why they pushed the start up a week early this year?

There's no football WC next summer. The Tour starts earlier, the (cycling) WC are a week earlier this year also, and the Vuelta has moved dates to stay the same wrt those races.

Sastre and the like have enough terrain to go berserk if they want to. Stages 13 and 14 especially.

Any serious attack on Ancares or San Lorenzo will do a lot of damage. And in the second case, the last climb starts right after its descent (first time ever a HC mountain pass is linked with a softer final climb without flat terrain in between in Spain).

The Tour didnt start later in 2010. It started on the first saturday of July - 3rd. This year it starts on the first saturday of July again - 2nd. In 2009 It started on the first saturday of July - 4th.

THis has got to be a great stage. Did we have one like this in any gt this year? Where the peak of the climb is far out but there is not much flat between there and the stage finish. On the Pau stage there was so much flat there was no point in attacking so far out. Here its descent and climb so someone can have a go. The problem is its the day before the 2 big stages so i doubt people will risk it.

So what is our first impression of the parcours?

Overall I think it's improvable but not bad. I'll give it a 7,5/10.

stage 13 reminds me a bit of this in the general layout

14a%20tappa%2099.gif

But i fear outside that the days of great attacks are gone

What i like

a lot of stages with a climb near the finish so that sprinters have to work for their wins

stage to San Lorenzo de El Escorial

stage 14

What i don't like

not enough TT

short mountain stages

mountain stages could have been harder

You're right about the Tour. I still recall those years when the normal starting date was last weekend of June except those years when there was football WC. But the Worlds are earlier this year and the Vuelta wants to finish 2 weeks before the Worlds.

Nibali and Antón are the only names listed in the web site as attending the presentation. I hope someone else joins them :D

I will bet Contadors' suspension is up and he will ride the Vuelta.
That would give the Vuelta the kick in the pants for some serious worldwide attention. It would really wake up the competition and be super good for cycling.

Mc Quack is already talking about the possibility of Contador not riding the Tour. That means a minimum of 1 year ban, which would not allow him to start the Vuelta in mid August.

I would think that with a one year ban for his uninntentional eating of tainted meat he would come off his ban at the end of tour, say July 20 2011.

It is all about the drama, and no matter what really happened, the Spaniards need their sports heroes.

How much will it cost to get Berto back on the bike. Let Berto Ride. A lot like when I was in Santa Rosa Ca. at the ToC and people were chanting Let Levi ride(Le Tour)!

Seeing as bans are often calculating as starting when the rider last raced, a 6 month ban might mean hed be getting ready to race at the start of the season.

Maybe they will reach a deal that Saxo cant come to the TOur with Contador so hell have to skip it (like when he first won it) but will be free to ride other races.

For the good of the sport, Alberto should lose last years tour, not ride this tour, but be able to begin riding a full season beginning Feb. 2011.

That would be totally fair+ Berto has to be tested more.

good for cycling? boring mountains, too much domination of one guy and probably one team. The Vuelta is the 3rd GT, but very exciting with smaller differences in the GC. People who like the Vuelta, like it because of the racing, not of one name dominating for one year and then go back to the tour for the next xxx number of years.

Is that your guess about Colombia?

My guesses are:

Caja Rural
Geox

Those two pretty much a lock, then two from Andalucia/Cofidis (is Moncutie carrying on?)/Colombia

It would be such a shame if Colombia es Passion didnt get a gt, but at the same time, Caja Rural and Andalucia should be allowed to race one too, and Cofidis need to be at the Vuelta with 3 time KOm there.

What a stupid policy it is to have teams like AGR, Quickstemp, Sky, Vacansaleil, BMC, Saxo, Rabobank, Radioshack, Karusha, Astana guaranteed for all 3 gts.

If they offer up good teams they can be in, but at least some of those teams will have second rate squads for the Vuelta while someone like Passion miss out.
