Not sure at all how this one will work out. I can't see Pinot's attack working out positively. Perhaps he is secretly working for his teammate (nah!) or just wants to get rid of the dead wood.

Not much dead wood in the break

Pinot should have waited and called their bluff

BMC for one would have had to start riding

Pinot doesn't want to target the GC I think. He may prefer a stage victory + good preparation for WC and IL than a 5th place in Madrid.

He obviously had 17 riders just sitting in the taxi.

It's understandable he needs a smaller group.

This. Attack, thin the herd and take the guys with you who might actually work. Then strike a deal that you'll do your longer turns as long as everyone works to the finish. At least he's taking the race into his own hands, rather than sitting in the group and hoping everyone does what he needs.

There's a difference between a smaller group and going with two though. Pinot just cleaned up Movistar's mess.

Yes, but how do you think these things work? It's not like Pinot has a button with the number 5 he can press to ensure five riders getting with him.

He tried an attack, only Teuns went with him, and he decided that was better than wait again because he probably wouldn't be able to make a surprise attack once more.
