This is a great move for Gusev and Plaza. Arroyo, Bakelandts and maybe Tschopp and Peraud could try to get a stage win too. Bye bye time boni.

Bye bye time boni? :) They have 2:40 on the peloton. That won't even be enough for the last mountain, let alone all 3. I don't think we can say for sure they will get home, not even close.

They are good riders (Plaza, Gusev, Bakelants, Arroyo...) but we all know what happens when the peloton get it going.

It would be really interesting to know who does the work in the escape. I would say Cesar Veloso, Cuesta and Sivtsov are just there to help their leader when they catch the break. Gusev is only there to hang onto Plaza and Arroyo. Gallopin is there to secure the mountain jersey for Moncoutie which i think he just did. It should be Gilbert, Hoste and Peraud working for Bakelants and Plaza+Arroyo for the team GC.

There will be big crowds, guaranteed. I hear this climb has been sold in Spain big time, like nothing since the Angliru.

+ its mere km from Madrid. God knows how 1 million people managed to get to the Zoncolan. God knows how they all get to the Tourmalet, or Aple, but to the Bolla, 2 million people lie within 1 hours drive of it.

Also the situation at the top could get out large crowds as well.

True, but these huge crowds always make me very nervous when I watch it. Specially the idiots that run along. Soon someone will fall and a rider will fall over him. It just has to happen someday.
I thought the crowds on the Madeleine were waaay too much for example. If a rider wanted to pass another rider it was practically impossible.

Madeline? When. They didnt have big crowds there this year. It was 30km from the finish.

The autobus missed the time limit last year in Sierra Nevada. They just changed the time limit.

No they didn't - Greipel was penalised 25 points and lost the green jersey for a few days to Valverde.

They were out of the time limit. Almost one third of the peloton was there. The organiser decided to keep them in the race applying penalties in the points classification as specified in UCI rules for these cases.

Poor Bakelants already punctured twice. Altough i think it's better now and later. He is still in the front group.

Yes, and look through my point again.

Gilbert has 100 points. If he takes both intermediate sprints he will have 108 points.

Cavendish has 136 points. If he is docked 25 points for missing the time limit, he will have 111 points.

Hence, Gilbert will be only 3 points off the green jersey.

However, this is contingent on both Cavendish and Farrar being in the autobus, thus both being penalised.

And its unlikely to mean much anyway, considering what tomorows outcome is very very very likely to be.

Same as last year: the man in green will get it. A different man this year, though ;)

One of the live coverages wrote it will be 20 today. Don't know which one.

It's the highest climb of the race, so it's very likely they give more points than in the other MTFs

Finally Katusha realized this break is not good for them and sent their team to the front. They are really slow with the head.

Slow with the head, fast with the legs. Gap is down to 3:30 already.

Just to make your point bigger: it is more like 4 million at 1 hour drive, if you consider that we are 6 million in the the Madrid Province. It is 60 km from the center of Madrid, it takes me 50 minutes to get up there in a saturday. However if we count the people in Segovia, Avila, and even Valladolid, very near also, the potential fans are an enormous number.

A friend just told me that he has never seen so many cyclist getting up there. And that the ski cable lifting pedestrians up there is collapsed.

Ditto Kadri for Roche.

Good to see Cuesta up there waving the flag for us fourty-somethings.

Any chance that they will let him lead over the Navacerrada as a farewell gift?
