He generally has a bad day that takes him out of contention...happened on several Giros at least.

it didn't happen in the giro he was 3rd in. and the vuelta may suit bruseghin better as it's less moutnainstages after another as in the giro. there's usually some stages in between and it's less explosive too.

Correct, that was the exception that confirms the "rule", it's likely he's more "cautious" too now...

Although this has nothing to do with stage 8 of la Vuelta, I am quite disgusted how CN managed to squeak a cheap shout out to Radioshack for winning the team classification, in an article supposedly about Ruben Plaza and his link to Operacion Puerto.

What I think is worse, is presuming Caisse really went for that team classification while foregoing other goals. The only team who really tried to win it, was Radioshack

I remember that RS chased down Moreau for very long in a mountainstage because of that. Which was kind of sad, because otherwise Moreau would've been KoM in his last race.

igor anton for the win,he and rodriguez to put at least one more minute to menchov.frank schleck and van garderen to crack big time.gillbert won't give the jersey without a fight.

It's almost impossible for Menchov to lose one minute unless he totally cracks. It's a short climb, there won't be big gaps between the contenders.

wow it seems that finally i'm right about something in this forum:)

it was a great stage.moncoutie:pla de beret, sierra nevada, xoret del cati.he's very good at choosing stages to win.chapeau!

i'm still amazed by caisse d'epargne boys:
5 Marzio Bruseghin (Ita) Caisse d’Epargne 0:01:10
6 Ruben Plaza (Spa) Caisse d’Epargne 0:01:15
11 Rigoberto Uran (Col) Caisse d’Epargne 0:01:28
16 David Arroyo (Spa) Caisse d’Epargne 0:01:58
18 Luis-Leon Sanchez (Spa) Caisse d’Epargne 0:02:21

some good tactics and one of them could win this vuelta.bruseghin,if he's like in giro 2008 is very dangerous,at this form,he could smoke the ITT and take at least 2 minutes from anton and rodriguez.anyway i'm pretty sure that in the final week mosquera will deliver some crazy attacks.spaniards will unite to crack nibali.can they make it?

Wait a minute, you don't count Menchov's performance as "cracking"? That's odd.

Supposedly he has a broken wrist from one of the many crashes at the start of the stage.

Arroyo and Petacchi were also pretty beaten up.

A broken wrist to Samu got Menchov a spot on the Tour podium. Just saying.

Considering Sánchez's performances after the wrist injury were 5th on the Tourmalet and a time trial performance above his normal abilities (excellent in technical ones, complete crap in power TTs), I'm calling bullcrap on that ;)

It was quite sad, Moreau was prevented from getting in the stage 17 breakaway and Gutiérrez too because the Shack chased down any attacks from Caisse d'Epargne riders because of that teams classification, when it was clear from week 1 that stagehunting was Caisse's main goal. Stage 9 they did a beautiful job of putting Luís León into GC contention, and they tried to put Plaza up in the top 10 on stage 16 too. So many potential attacks were shut down by Radioshack.

The main thing that cost Moreau the KOM was the agreement to let Pineau take all the climbs in stage 7, but Radioshack chasing down all the Caisse attacks in the Pyrenées not only helped make for a more boring race but did prevent Moreau being able to put enough pressure on Charteau, even if he hadn't been able to wrest the jersey from him.

You're talking about 5 years back. He for example did a very good TT in the Valencia TT last year (although it was 30k) which was not technical and completely flat.

For Frank to lose 1:37 to rodriguez, that was very dissapointing. What happened? Menchov wasn't that good either. Still a good stage. It was great to see Anton and Rodriguez going at it. Also good to see Sastre attacking and then grappling on to stay with the Anton Group.

great to see the vuelta organisers fixing up the barriers for the riders at the finish of the stage. we don't want to see incidents like last year happening again.

Anyway, last time a lotto lost the leaders jersey of la vuelta was at Xorret de Cati and that same rider went on to win the world championships in that year. Good omen for gilbert.

The del Cati is such a brutal climb watching the stage last night. Did anybody else hear Sean Kelly's scathing criticism of Carlos Barredo? I found it quite funny myself.

Now we are up to 8 different stage winners, from 8 different teams, and 8 different rider nationalities.

What did he say? Does Kelly wish there were fewer attacks?

Harmon offered Barredo up as somebody who could possibly try something in the stage and Kelly just said, with no tone of humour at all, "no, he'll just attack at completely the wrong time as usual", then when pressed, went on to talk about how he was clearly very strong in the stage to Pau of the Tour but wasted it trying to TT in from over 40km out, and how his attempt to beat sprinters' trains a couple of days ago was "idiotic". Kelly pretty much said he's a very talented rider with no tactical sense whatsoever.

In which case he should unite with Linus Gerdemann.
