The problem is that there's decades of precedent in these situations, like it or not. There are many gray areas but this instance doesn't seem to be one of them. In VTT and CX, a mechanical or crash is just part of the race but on the road, with everyone riding in a pack you have to account for a touch of the wheels or someone crashing in front of you.

I know but I still hate it. In any sport.

Movistar DS Arrieta pretty much accused the UCI of giving carte blanche to the team cars via race radio to motorpace everybody back into the peloton. Which is pretty scandalous if true.
