It was today for some reason. He’s usually pretty good on a descent.
Maybe dusty roads with the dust more visible to the riders than the TV viewers? . . . But Roglic didn't seem to pay attention. :grimacing:

G. Martin pulled a G. Martin / O'Connor today. Well played.

It was G. Martin classic, because O'Connor has provn that he could actually finish it off, which Martin might never be able to do. Also Martin has pretty much done it in every GT he's ridden.

I have this feeling that Roglic's head isn't right here. A lot of pressure on him to win, but the memories of that Paris Nice and TdF loss is playing heavily on his mind.

Think he's just trying to gain as much time as possible now to give himself as much sliding room as possible in the brutal third week.

Sean Kelly is absolutely mystified by that attack today. Still shaking his head in disbelief :tearsofjoy: And I agree with him. There's just no obvious reason to take those risks like that on that descent today.

I think week three will be very very interesting. If nothing else, to see just how much more amateur Ineos tactics can get. Perhaps they're just sick of seeing Movistar keep winning the inepitude team title year after year, and now they want a piece of that action too.

It's very obvious why he attacked. He simply felt great and because it being uncontrolled and unexpected helped him too.

Then he had a gap that was actually worth defending so he lost his head a little on the descent.

Also, 300 IQ 4D chess to decrease the criticism of not attacking on stage 18 in the Tour last year.

It was a bold move that didnt quite pan out.

I like the intention and doing the unexpected, but in hindsight it might have cost more than what was gained. It might come back to haunt him. We will see.

The race is still on.

The move was good. Risky but good. The chase immediately imploded and it would have been Mas led by lopez following him on the descend - I think he could have gained considerably without the crash.

That certainly was his intent and the point of any apparent weakness to Mas should be a settle issue. Movistar likely isn't harboring any illusions about their situation which makes it all the better for JV. The after video of him with Kuss at the finish would suggest he has a little "scuffage" but no serious injury.

Never a bad place to gain time. Jumbo have taken a lot of flak for being too conservative and not maximising their opportunities - largely with some justification - and if Rogla doesn't make a mistake on the descent, there would be no reason to criticise it at all. But if he touches a wheel or makes the same mistake on the descent when riding in a group, or if he blows up on the last couple of days and loses the GC by less than 30 seconds, people would be forever saying, why didn't he work harder on a stage like this when he was the strongest in the race? They've shipped the jersey to a breakaway so they don't need to toast the domestiques tomorrow, and Roglič has learnt something about Mas' form too, having been the one man to stick with him on Sunday. And, once more: time was taken out of rivals, with the Ineos pair losing time. The kind of thing they weren't doing in the 2020 Tour and which came back to bite them, and they weren't doing in the 2020 Vuelta and it nearly came back to bite them until Abarcá decided to throw a beanball at Acquadro. Roglič has had trouble with running out of steam and showing weakness in the last few days of a GT, so after last year's high profile heartbreak, it's worth him expending a bit more energy now to gain more time while he's the strongest, so he's got as much of an advantage as possible for if he isn't the strongest later.

After all, in the words of Óscar Freire, in order to win, one must first be prepared to lose.

It’s really weird for someone with multiple top 15 GC finishes in Grand Tours that on his frequent raids to regain lost time he is never strong enough to make the final selection for a stage win from the breakaway he is in.

Admirable and full of heart but clearly just doesn’t have elite level ability.

I think he just has 0 rouleur ability so if he wants to be in the break he completely wasts his climbing legs on getting in that break in the first place.

Kudos to Roglic for trying. We criticize him all the time for being conservative and always waiting for the sprint, so this is a good change.

He still needs to work on his bike handling abilities.

could be a reason, yeah. But this Vuelta he also just isn't in particularly good shape. I think he'd need another couple of breakaways like todays to finish Top 10 even.

He did come close in the Vuelta last year, but he wasn't really focusing on the GC there at all. This year I'm not sure what he's actually aiming for. I thought he would try to defend the KOM, but he was quite quickly distanced in the competition without losing to much time in the GC. Now he's up there, but I'm not convinced he will be strong enough to stay there, even if he gets into more breaks, cause he will just lose that time again the next day. And after doing the Tour and the Olympics, he might not have much left in the tank at the end of the race either.

I think he just has 0 rouleur ability so if he wants to be in the break he completely wasts his climbing legs on getting in that break in the first place.

Well he definitely knows how to get into them, but you could be right anyway. He doesn't have the big accelerations in him either, and because he's using energy on almost every hilly/montaneous stage, there will just always be someone with fresher legs than him.

So, I'm very slow on the uptake today, apparently Babyface (Storer) won it?

Otherwise the last 1k I caught on TV looked lovely, loved the shots of the water after the podium ceremony.

And Roglic fell once more, just like mohoric, nibali and so many top descenders this year. With that they all do much worse than, for example, Evenepoel. I wonder if they will all be described as denigrating and mocking as Evenepoel now.

Roglic crashes. Time to get triggered about a mocking nickname for a different rider from months ago again.
