Cannot understand how Matthews is favourite to win this. Next to no chance to survive that climb.
well, in the pre-stage interview, Cerny just said that it could be a good stage to escape, but they'd try to get over the climb with Jakobsen for a sprint :p

I agree. If he's in the break others will attack before the final climb and he will get no assistance in chasing. And, even though he's climbing well, there's no way he will be the strongest in the break on that climb. That last 5km is proper difficult.

This is the kind of stage where someone at 300-1 or more could win by getting into the break and attacking before the final climb. Riders like Tusveld and Cras, for example, both of whom look to have good legs.

I'm going with Padun (60-1) however. I think Bahrain will give him freedom after he babysat Landa two days ago, while Caruso rode to victory. If he gets to the climb with the lead group (that's a big "if", because making the break will be tough, and then there will be attacks before the climb) then he can ride away in the last couple of km of the climb.

Shame we can't see the breakaway efforts.
Weren't much so far, but today's obvious breakaway stage and half of the job's gonna be done in the beginning.

The problem for them will be making the break. Doesn't look like a profile for featherweight climbers unless their teams are really committed.

Senechal, Meeus, Tratnik trying to breakaway.

90% of breakaway stages these days have long flat run ups towards the decisive part of the stage. Tour and Giro were the same, hills and/or mountains in the beginning of a stage have become an exception. It's pretty sad, the beginning of a stage like the one that Storer won earlier this Vuelta are awesome to see.

I guess giving the big classic guys a few chances is not a bad thing per se. For example I'm ok with having someone like Matthews or Senechal or Van Baarle get a shot at a stage win from the break in a stage like today.
But I agree there should be more hilly/climbing stage starts.

First hour without the break.
The previously mentioned trio was close to succeeding.

Just over 50 average.

Wouldn't it be hard for Magnus Cort to take another stage victory? All the other riders in his breakaway will expect him to do the work, even more than they did the other day. He needs one or two equally strong riders to go with him.

He also has to survive a harder climb, so if he has a couple of stronger riders with him, he might not be as big a favourite anymore.
