Out of form in 6th place seems fantastic to me..
I expect a third week full of goos surprises from some guys, like Almeida and specially MAL.
Maybe starting tomorow..

I expect some kind of good performance from MAL in the next stages, specially at Sierra Nevada. I have serious doubts about Almeida, i think that he will not improve is form despite usually becoming stronger towards the end of the GTs he rode. He came from covid after the Giro and with suboptimal preparation for this, besides he seems somehow out of focus for this race. Having said that, wouldn't be surprised if he finishes this Vuelta inside top 5 ahead of Ayuso.

Remco has to stay put. Take Roglic's wheel, let JV react to Mas, if Mas tries something: and he won't. Carapaz in Mas' place, I would worry...but Enric is no Richard.

The break can make it. Vine, maybe Pinot, not much GC action, it's not steep enough. But it's not what this stage was meant to be anyways.

With Yates and Sivakov withdrawing it stinks. Ineos could have potentially pulled a flier like with Bernal last year with 3 riders in the top 10. One of the 3 Ineos, one of UAE, Yates, and MAL going off the front would spice things up real nice. I think Evenepoel and Quickstep take it easy today.

Remco should NOT be following the others. He has struggled when he plays the games of the climbers with accelerations and slow downs.

He has always been his best when he dictates the tempo. If he starts playing the climber games, he will throw away the Vuelta. If he dictates the pace, he easily wins

If Remco is feeling good there nothing anyone can do. If he does fade it won't be stage 12. This climb looks good for him. Next week could be different.

I'm kind of warming to him. It can be difficult being a young prodigy. Lots of pressure and expectations are placed. When you don't meet those expectation the doubters jump all over you. So if he finally delivers I will be happy for him - but he still needs to deliver. Today I hope he delivers.

Hopefully, the climb sees attacks from GC riders and not a 500m from the line Rog stomp. They need to start putting Remco under pressure now and goad him into covering everyone's attacks. The smart thing for Remco is to conserve energy and ride tempo.

it's funny. daniel Friebe on The Cycling Podcast waxed poetic about how remco was hard to like because he has always been successful/precocious/dominant, etc. the funny thing is, i almost feel it is the opposite, because there have always been so many doubters and detractors rushing at every moment to diminish him.

And then, on top of that, he had his incredible fall and injury to come back from.

to me, because of this, he has always felt like an underdog, and therefore very appealing.

he dominates juniors like no one ever before, and so many people question whether that will ever translate to being a good pro.

he does amazing things even in his first season as a 19 year old and then it's the constant doubts about whether he can do it at pro tour level, or high mountains, or steep mountains or over three weeks, it goes on and on.

then he crashes while in the small group leading Lombardia (his first monument) after a season where he literally won every small stage race he entered at the age of 20...

his first race back is (ridiculously) the giro. based on that race and that lack of preparation, people then firmly dismissed him. he could never do anything, climb, do three weeks, win at pro tour level, etc...

to me, the many haters over the years, have actually made remco an underdog and therefore very easy to pull for.

and for that reason, i want him to win, and not just win, but dominate. a win at the top of sierra nevada would be the icing on the cake as far as i am concerned. tho i will be totally thrilled if he just wins the vuelta.

Problem is, when the gradient is 6-7% and there's proper wind, you can really get exposed just sitting at the front and taking the wind.

I think sitting on the wheel of Van Wilder no matter who attacks as long as possible and then go very fast (but stable pace) the last 3-5 km when it gets steeper is a good tactic. He has a gap, so he should play it low risk.

Same here. And honestly I don‘t really get these words on Evenepoel of both of them Daniel Friebe and Brian Nygaard, the latter even said he did a survey on if and how much people are happy when Evenepoel wins races..
Shouldn‘t be the usual Cycling Podcast standard, should it… just random bashing for no reason.

So yeah - I want him to dominate today and on Sunday. Next week should be not a hard one for him if he‘s still almost three minutes up in GC at that point.
Let‘s just hope there are no more Covid related DNS during the next days.

As predicted Jay Vine is on the attack. Has Padun and Carapaz and Fedorov with him,
But ok, it's early in the stage and they only have 10s according to the ProCyclingStats live ticker.

oh - and now they are caught.

Needs a few rouleurs in the group, ideally teammates of better climbers, to build a gap on the flat 75km after the initial hilly start otherwise it will be a GC stage fight on the final climb.

the hilly part is over now, so it's gonna be tough for the climbers. I wouldn't be surprised if the group is even worse than last time - but still makes it. Can't see a single team which would be interested in chasing today.

edit: but now there are 30 guys ahead, so that should include some climbers as well

Was that a survey of riders or of other bourgeois media types? I find the Cycling Podcast hard going at the best of times and shut down that episode as there was too much crap about wine, cricket and taking the piss out of chicken farmers.

Wonder how the breakaway riders feel about Vine's presence...
