If he wanted the easy life, he'd have signed up to be GC G's key domestique. He'd have gone home by now.
To be fair, he's come to a race with Addy Engels in the team car and Primož Roglič as leader. That usually would be a recipe for the easy life for him. That has historically been the alineation that has resulted in the most negativity, the worst of the "everybody ride at the speed of the third best domestique" group ride stages, and many of my problems with the usage of Kuss. He is the most angering and the most negative of the Jumbo DSes, and Kuss has historically been used far more negatively when "shielding" Rogla (usually by sitting behind him looking bored) than when riding for Jonas.

A very, very difficult situation for Evenepoel against the massive Jumboblock of three GC-riders. I'm convinced Evenepoel could beat Roglic without Vingegaard and Kuss. But not with Vingegaard and Kuss in support. They will test Evenepoel at the end of the climb today. Nothing decisive. A few seconds. But in two days, on the flanks of the Tourmalet, Jumbo will send Vingegaard in the attack. Evenepoel will have no choice and will be forced to ride pace. With Roglic and Kuss in his wheel. But also Ayuso, Mas, Soler and Almeida doing nothing. Because they know they can't win the Vuelta anyway. Just saving forces till the end of the climb, going for the third or fourth place in the overall. Two possibilitys for Evenepoel. He's is not coming back on Vingegaard, so Vingegaard will come back in the GC. Or Evenepoel is coming back on Vingegaard, but will immediately be attacked by Kuss. If Evenepoel can't react or don't want to react (having Roglic, Vingegaard, Ayuso, Mas.... in his wheel), then Kuss probably will win this Vuelta. If Evenepoel is still able to react and come back on Kuss, Roglic will attack and take enough time to take the red jersey or to become second in the GC after Kuss. No way Evenepoel could turn the situation around in the last mountain stages (Angliru).
Next year, in the Tour de France, it will be another situation. I guess with Pogacar in topform (with a strong team as well). With a hopefully strong INEOS-team. Evenepoel will not be the only one competing against the Jumbo-giants.

As you said Friday will be a huge day and the day when long range attacks will make sense for Jumbo to crack Evenepoel. Evenpoels team will be an important factor. If for example Vingegaard attacks earlier, but also with riding in the wind and then Evenepoel´s teammates can limit the time gap within 2 minutes until the final climb without Evenepoel have to work, this would help a lot...

The only thing I ask is for this guy to be waiting for the riders at laguna negra

Is that Nairo in Green?

Curious stat: despite leading the BYR competition for 19 days in the last two Vueltas, today is the first day Remco actually wears the white jersey.

Also, the white jersey is the fifth different jersey he wears this Vuelta after the SQS jersey (in the TTT), the Belgian Champs jersey, the red leader jersey and the Worlds TT jersey.

And there's a reasonable chance he might wear the KOM jersey tomorrow since he's second in that competition only 1 point behind Sepulveda (although the points today will probably go to the breakaway).

26 man group at the front now with G and Gregoire. They seem to be gone.

Also Ganna and Kron among them.

So as expected, big group but not a lot of climbers. Some teams with multiple riders tho. Wouldn't be surprised if there as 5-6 man group going clear before the climb.
