Totally agree.

That's why I think it's a bit of both. I think they miscalculated how strong he is and how hard it would be to reel in a breakaway on a stage like today if someone is on form. I do also think/hope that they are underestimating him which, for the reasons you've pointed out, are stupid.

It's not quite the same thing obviously, but I've found in my own racing experience that there are times when there is this group think in the peloton and riders have an unfairly poor reputation for being weaker. The old "he's not strong" and "don't worry about him" BS. I love it when they're proven wrong.
But this is the DS decision—and as in many sports where managers, coaches whatever have control they tend to think they are right no matter, and are inflexible about changing strategy on the fly. Batsh@t crazy
