A Grand Tour shouldn't include stages as short as today's, of course, but generally I don't think it's a bad parcours for a start. Three very different kind of sprints (flat, climbers, hilly) are fine for me.

Reminder to everyone that you are welcome to join me in a boycott of today stage.

Also, I just looked in detail the route again, and they don't even go to Spain until stage 5, and then stage 5 it's a TTT!!! So the Vuelta will be 6 stages in when it actually starts properly
Yeah the TTT is just the cherry on the cake, just make it a bloody ITT then it'll have a little bit of meaning.

2009 Vuelta didn't get to Spain until stage 5 either. Three stages in the Netherlands, then one crossing over into Belgium.

Admittedly we also then have a stage finish and subsequent start in Andorra, but it's not unique so to speak. The 1992 Tour had the first two stages in San Sebastián and a subsequent start (although they crossed the border early in the third stage (stage 2, due to a prologue), but then left France a few kilometres into stage 6 and would not return until a few kilometres after the start of stage 10. The 1987 Tour also didn't enter France until partway through stage 5, having a prologue and two stages all around West Berlin (which has no even remotely categorisation-worthy hills) and two more stages around West Germany before entering France - though the latter West German stage and stage into France were semitappes being held on the same day.

I actually think with it being so short there is a good chance of proper break formation action as teams might think there is a strong chance that a break could stick all the way if big engines like Campanaerts, Ganna, Kung make a big push.

The other likely scenario is Lidl Trek drilling the later climbs to drop Philipsen and any other fast finishers who don’t climb as well as Mads Pedersen.

Pog was seen in the vicinity. Is he up to no good?
