Freire finished third yesterday, any clues as to why he retired?

Saw a Cofidis rider involved in the crash yesterday. Was that Edet?

Also I like how people bring up a couple of stage 3rd places as an example of Rodriguez's prowess in the high mountains. Can't help but shake my head.

You said J Rod doesnt get time in the mountains. It doesnt matter if he comes 1st 3rd or 150th, if he attacks 20k from the end or 200m from the end, if he comes 40 seconds in front of Nibali on these mountain stages he is gaining time, proving you wrong

I wanted to edit my previous post but took to long writing so I might as well put it here. Pay attention to the penultimate paragraph.

You deliberately bring up individual stages. Anglru was a very good performance on the most challenging climb in the Vuelta but that was 1 stage.

Sestrieres one can argue that the real opposition that day were Menchov who was a pale shadow of himself in that Giro and Kreuziger who was dropped a million miles before the top of Finestre and miraculously got back. Maybe Nibali on a bad day can also be included. However Sestrieres is a perfect example of my issues with Rodriguez. He can attack apparently from far out on the climb and he can make an attack last til the end. Yet those attacks are frustratingly rare. Attacking in the last km is a safer bet and with his acceleration more likely to succeed however I personally feel that this way of riding is not attractive.

Pena Cabarga and Xorret del Cati are not hills and I never said so. At least as far as I remember. However these are climbs less than 20 minutes long not Finestre, Stelvio, Galibier, Plateau de Beille, Zoncolan etc etc etc. They are really different.

As for the time gained in the mountains he wasn't in the top-5 of climbers in the 2010 Tour, wasn't really better than Nibali in the 2010 Vuelta (on real time he was worse) and was invisible until the last week in the Giro but there he can be forgiven.

This time around there are no excuses. He is strong, didn't have to peak twice before, the competition is a struggling a bit so I hope he can ride in the more entertaining fashion instead of waiting for the red kite as I believe he has that in him.

Why the hell Freire withdraws?? I don´t get it.

I think he may do something big in Copenhagen. Is he jumping the next 6 hard days because he may be better-off with more specific training?

I can agree with that, he will move down in my books if he doesn't try and make some bigger moves on the MTFs. Of course I am supporting him and hoping he can do something (as he is zero chance of winning the race just collecting time bonuses).

I think he's just in a terrible shape and won't do anything this year.

Eurosport? Go tits up, again.
2 live stages in succession hit by their shambolic scheduling.

Show me where I wrote "hills" in relation to Rodriguez on this thread and then we can discuss hopefully without you deliberately misunderstanding me.

You said that he doesn't gain time in the proper mountains. So if it's not a hill and it's not a mountain, what is Peña Cabarga then? False flat?

I always feel like this heated discussions could be avoided if people cared to explain their point, instead of making a misterious line out of a post. It's much easier to respect an opinion when you present it the way you did.

Anyway, I'm crossing my fingers for Nibali and Scarponi (specially the last one). Let's hope they don't feel the efects of yesterday crash. They're needed to light up the fught for GC.
