ASO dont care much for doping. If it affected viewing figures then maybe they would do something about it. Heck Festina are using Virenque to flog watches on TV during the Tour. That tells us all we need to know about the money men. Lots will continue to watch now to see if any more mutant attacks happen.....The 2012 TdF was a snore fest. Sky repeated it in 2013 and now again in 2015. Does ASO care? Nope would be my guess. They work with the figures that mean money. The race itself is really inconsequential as long as it continues day after day. The doping is all part of the fabric for ASO.[/quo

Agree, of course. But you must agree that they started sweating a bit when they saw one French hope after another getting dropped like cat 4's mid way up the first frigging mountain in the 2015 Tour.

Yes, but ASO have politicians in their back pockets. The TdF is the biggest ad for French Tourism ever and I bet ASO get a big wad of EUROs from the French for it.

Forgot to mention that I often take a different angle on where you're coming from, one thing I've always agreed with is your stance regarding JV.
Seems to me he's always tried to beat Lance at his own game, but in an even more conniving way. JV is smart; Lance isn't stupid, but he was always thinking about himself.
Anyway point being is the current structure is in my opinion not entirely sustainable.
I get your reference to wrestling, but how many parents encourage their kids to become pro wrestlers?
In order to maintain a sport whereby you've got parents encouraging their kids coming up the system, you need to at least maintain the impression that's it done on the up and up. You can't have scenes like we saw today and are likely to see during the rest of the Tour.

JV is more than smart he is devious.

Well the Yanks have more than enough wanting to be pro wrestlers, half the population would do anythign to get on tv.

You just have to look at the sport of rugby(union) and its rise in popularity (espcially in Ireland) and the kids being told to bulk up if they want to do well. Major problem, but parents are pushing their kids and are part of the problem.

I remember in Italy in 2011 seeing a 10/11/12 year old out training on his bike while an adult (his Dad i presumed) rode on a scooter just behind, during school hours.
Were the kids .doped?

Ok, fair enough. But that goes back to my point: The problem isn't the Walshes or ASo's of the world. The problem is within the sport itself.
I'm willing to bet there were a lot of humiliated team leaders being dropped today who were wondering just what the eff happened on the first day in the mountains.
My point being is the riders should form a union and get together with sport administrators to figure this thing out.

The rugby kids are all doing creatine and other protein shakes. Not a fan of Rugby.

After cooling down a bit, I've come to think Walsh has a point. A flat run in to the finish and to the stage should be more about total watts, it should hurt the true mountain goats harder. And given that it's the first mountain stage coming off a rest day, it was more about sheer power than recovery/endurance. Heck Tony Gallopin got a top-10 on the day.

If Plateau de Beille sees Froome take a minute from Quintana all bets are off.

Re: Walsh blames it on the climb.

Walsh should have blamed Il Mortirolo during Il Giro for not permitting Aru to win the race :D

All bets were off when he transformed before Vuelta'11 and Sky had an alien on their hands.

I still find it bizarre that a few weeks before the Vuelta, he was getting his a$$ handed to him in Poland.

Walsh suffered without access for so long. Now he has access like Phil Liggett had with Lawnce. He should be so happy!

@mattslaterbbc 26s26 seconds ago

Interesting comment from @DavidWalshST on @bbc5live about Team Sky's rivals being 'amateurish' in their preparations for #tdf....

Froome claims to have always been a mountain goat. Why would such a finish therefore benefit him more?

Well, I think it was pretty obvious yesterday that the other teams are not doing (i.e. taking) what it takes to win.

Mountain goats in my glossary (or bibliography, in clinic jargon) are the smaller lither climbers. They actually look like goats when climbing mountains on a bike.:D I'm thinking of Pantani, Gaul, Purito, Bartali, Zoetemelk, Quintana, et al. Alberto barely qualifies. A little too tall, too much of a time-trialler. But I'l make an exception for him and the 5'10", 56kg Bahamontes.

My point was that assuming similar W/kg, the smaller riders would have to push themselves more in order to maintain the high pace we've seen on the flats. Particularly given that even the aero advantage due to their smaller surface area on flats would be significantly nullified riding in the bunch, since the heads of state have rarely, if ever, spent time on the front (except for, for whatever reason, Vincezo). On a more up and down stage that advantage would be reduced, and theoretically they'd get to the final climb with similar levels of exertion. If that theory has a bit of truth in it we might expect to see Quintana stay a little closer to Froome tomorrow than he managed yesterday.

Walsh says other teams are amateurs and they're hopeless

Wasn't that one of the arguments the LA camp used to have? :D

Geraint Thomas using that other fan with a typewriter Fotheringham to lay all the balme at Armstrong's door!

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/jul/15/chris-froome-lance-armstrong-geraint-thomas-tour-de-france

Geraint Thomas has said that he and his fellow Tour de France riders are still “paying the price” for Lance Armstrong’s crimes as his Team Sky leader, Chris Froome, was again put on the defensive with the release of new video material on Wednesday.

oh puleeease.....
