Isn't that one of Scott Socal's college pictures?

The funny part was that I was'nt even hung over after that.

I really could drink a lot when I was younger...

As an apology as well as further submission of quality, today I'm drinking unpasteurized Momokawa Nama Sake. This can only be purchased at the SakeOne Kura in Forest Grove, OR because it is unpasteurized.

However, there is a delightful range of sakes produced there and I would encourage any of you to try this one:
imageresolver

This is roughly as close as you can get to the one I'm drinking now. =) Oh yeah...the guy wearing the black t-shirt in the picture on the tour page is named Tony and he's a kick and knows his sake!

Does Hugh live around here? Geez, after all the TFF and Hog posts, I figured that I was alone, naive, and thoroughly screwed up in Oregon...the Colonies...lol

Been stuck on a local Atlanta beer, Swee****er. I've seen it in the fridge and never made the leap until two weeks ago. They have a regular IPA and the 420 which is an "Extra IPA." Not sure what makes it "extra" but prefer the regular.

sweet water, you just can't say- t wat-. here in the Colonies no one uses it like
that. lame.
also the extra is likely stronger as in higher ABV.

A couple of my buddies and I conducted a side-by-side taste test at the Back Abbey this past weekend.

The contenders (Belgian, of course)

Buffalo Stout

St Bernardus Apt 12

Rochefort 10

And the winner was.... Rochefort 10.

Apt 12 a close 2nd, Buffalo a distant 3rd.

All were fantastic.

I was at the Abbey also, although not part of your taste test I was partaking of some Rochefort 8. I enjoyed it thoroughly.....:)

My second choice of late has been Corsendonk.

I drink those beers and am just floored at how good they are. You can buy Corsendonk (750ml) at Total Wine and BevMo.

Of course you can't get the back Abbey Burger and Frites at those places. The Burger and Rochefort 10 is an exceptional pairing at the BA...

I'd also recommend Troubadour Obscura if we're talking the same ballpark as Rochefort and Abt for the donkers. :)

Scott, you can probably find Ellezelleoise Hercule Stout (not a real stout) over there, so if you have tried it I'd love to hear where it fits on your donker scale.

Next time you're over here, here's a hot tip: see if you can look up Nieuwhuys Alpaide. It comes from a café microbrewery in downtown Hoegaarden. Discovered it almost by chance at my favourite store in Winksele. For me, it seriously challenges Abt 12 and Rochefort 10 but it's rare as heck. :)

My envy cup overfloweth.

Thanks for the tip. I'll be in Bruges on Mach 30, 2011. As soon as the Flanders Cyclo is over I will be on a prowl for beer.:)

I used to be picky. Not so much anymore. I am sticking with yuengling. Esp. when rite aid has 12pks in bottles for like $9. There is another version of a beer marketed by a certain texan (I have never had an ultra) but the other versions light and reg. are all right.

Purple haze if I am feeling like splurging. Bass. Newcastle. used to like Sam but their non-lager's are all pretty weak. new Belgium's wheat is good. Amstel is a good light beer.

save the flames, it's a thread about beer in a cycling forum.

Not Heineken. I bought some earlier this week for the first time in a while and realized just how terrible it is.

Over the years I've come like Pilsner Urquell and Stella Artois to the exclusion of all others.

Remind me to visit the Back Abbey should I ever make it over there.

They sponsor a cycling team too. I consider all these guys friends.

They would make a killing if they sold the kit. If I wore it in Belgium, people would think I'm Stijn Devolder.

I love that place... but the only way I could ever be part of that team would be if there were NO perks.

If there were, my liver would be truly effed.

When you get down to it, I find it hard to beat a good old Sam Adams Cream Stout.
Overall, I'm partial to U.K. brewed ales and stout ales. I tried as many as I could get my hands on while over there and was never disappointed.
