So Wiggins would have been able to follow Cunego easily. Correct?will10 said:Look more closely at the competition in Suisse before sweeping predicitions like that. Everybody else is at the Dauphine, frankly.

Damiano Machiavelli said:Wiggins winning should tell you all you need to know about the level of competition at the Dauphine. The supposed competition treated the race like it was the Tour of California.
Logic-is-your-friend said:The same could of course be said about Cunego leading in the TDS.
Mellow Velo said:Today, for the first time, he looked as good as he did in 2004.
Those weren't mugs he took 2 minutes out of inside 5kms.
Anyone down playing this race, in relation to the Dauphine, should think again.
The only guy who could possibly have gone with him, on this form, from that field, is the one who rode the Giro and isn't at Le Tour.
Of course, 4 weeks from now and he may well be getting dropped on the big cols by Cancellara and Voigt, again.

Damiano Machiavelli said:Dauphine: Wiggins, winner of just about nothing on the road, does well in a time trial. The TdF contenders are unwilling to go too far into the red to win the Dauphine so they can save themselves for a meaningless top ten at the Tour. Looking at you, Evans.
Suisse: Cunego, Giro winner and three time winner of Lombardia, takes control of the race with two ballsy rides in two stages.

Simply The Best said:What do you expect from Evans he is going to continue to go for his dream of winning the TDF until he is simply to old and by that time he would have lost anychance of ever winning a LBL title which could be realistic in my opinion he tried to peak for this race
gilbertador said:Wiggins and Cunego are very comparable.....to lesser extents each one has one stand out great GT GC position and none others that compare to it, Wiggins a 4 and nothing close to it Cunego a 1 and has never looked a favorite for the win again
damiano machiavelli said:cunego has three top fives in the giro including a win. He has won a monument three times. He won amstel-gold. He took second in the world championship road race. He has multiple stage wins at the giro and the vuelta. He has a very long list of top fives in one day races ranging from lbl to montepaschi strade bianche. He has won many short stage races. Aside from all that they are comparable.
I agree this was a fantastic showing by Cunego, but I don't think it was really better than the 2009 Vuelta. He won the stage to the Alto Aitana, being the only one from the favorites group who could pass Moncoutie, but his stage win to Pandera was especially great, being in the front group all day, attacking with 15km to go, and still barely losing time to all the GC favorites who hadn't done anything all day.Mellow Velo said:Today, for the first time, he looked as good as he did in 2004.

Although the stages that suit him suit Gilbert even better.
